Thursday, March 24, 1977 Provo Nine Warriors Grab Win Over Philadelphia By FRED LIEF UPI Sports Writer Rick Barry, playing with the savvy of a schoolyard hustler, boosted the Golden State Warriors to a victory over Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday night. After going from the floor in the first half, Barry played his trump card in the final two periods with a shooting spree to snap Philadelphia's four - game winning By THAYNE HANSEN Herald Correspondent The Provo Bulldogs won their season baseball opener, downing East Wednesday, led by the beat of John Sagers. The third baseman rapped out four hits, including one stand - up double, for two RBIs. Sagers was far from lifeless once he reached either the base path, stealing three bases and 4 Still, with the Lakers' win over Indiana Wednesday night Golden State remains 4' i games behind the Pacific Division leaders. Jim Norton headed the Bulldog's pitching staff on the mound, baffling the East nine with his curve, to strike out seven in the first four innings. Norton finished the first three trips to the mound with ease, only giving up one hit, but got into trouble in the fourth inning. With two men already on Norton walked the Leopards' clean up man to load the bases with no one out. The Bulldogs tightened the defense to get two away on a play at the plate and then Norton really bore a pop-udown. The right hander caught the batter looking for the third strike to end the inning unscathed. The Provo nine only faltered in the fifth frame as a costly error at first base set East up to score three unearned runs plus one on its own. The Bulldogs countered in the fifth inning with two runs to go back out in front to stay. Coach Lind Williams has been busily preparing Provo High School's young swimming team this week for the State at the High School Championships University of Utah on Friday and Saturday. "We are young and don't have a lot of depth," said Williams, "but we could finish as high as fourth in the meet behind Cyprus, East, and possibly Bountiful, if our kids all swim well." The Bulldogs had seven swimmers and two divers qualify for the meet by virtue of their performances in the Region 4 Meet that was held in Provo last Thursday. Kearns won the Region 4 team title by a scant eight points over Provo, but is not expected to do as well as Provo in the State Meet where first places are at a premium.
