Yesterday we discussed how the planets were formed, and indicated that scientists still cannot explain it exactly. Today we will discuss how the oceans were formed, and the strange thing is that scientists cannot fully explain this either. So there are many things about our earth that are still a mystery to science. It seems certain that oceans did not exist in the first stage of the '99.1 by NF loc I '1-- 9 uSPMITUOn TMWg By Charles M. Perhaps they HR COME 6ACK " By Bil Keane THE FAMILY CIRCUS came into being as clouds of vapor that turned into water as the earth grew cool. Estimates have been made of the age of the oceans based on the amount of mineral salt in the ocean today. These estimates range between 500 million and 1 billion years. Scientists are pretty sure that most of the earth's land was covered by the sea at one time in the past. Some areas of the earth have been under water several times. But we do not know if any part of the deep ocean ever was land, or whether any land that exists today was once beneath the deep ocean. There is a great deal of evidence to show that certain parts of the land were once the bottom of shallow seas. For example, most of the limestone, sandstone, shale found on land were deposited as sediment. The chalk found in England, Texas and Kansas was deposited on the bed of a sea K is made up of the shells of tiny creatures that sank to the ocean bed to form what we call chalk. Today, the waters of the oceans s cover nearly of the surface of the earth. At the bottom of the seas there are sections that are like mountain ranges, and there are plateaus and plains. But the ocean bottom is not as varied as the surface of the continents. (Win an illustrated "Tell Me Why" book, with hundreds of questions answered.
