The Orem Chamber of Commerce is no exception and is currently in its fourth year of sponsoring the city's program. others. The image of the people walking through the door with their arms full will remain with him always. It has inspired him to work hard to do the same for others "until the day I die," he said. Provo Elks, and others, to provide the names of families who need help. Last year, the Orem program was responsible for providing clothing, books, toys, turkeys, hams, and full dinners to approximately 300 families in the county. An improved economy this year should cut that number significantly, but the help is still needed and appreciated. es full-swin- contribute Christmas gifts and food to needy families in Utah County. As a young child, he remembers volunteers carrying food and gifts into his home to provide a merry Christmas for his family. (Continued From Page 1) search for the "Last Cabbage Patch" is futile and are buying substitutes. But even many of the substitutes are sold out. "We had a doll that came in that was just as cute and was from Italy. Because we were out of Cabbage Patch people were buying them instead," said Lye. The demand for the Cabbage Patch dolls after Christmas will still be higher than the supply toy store owners in Utah Valley will be able to obtain. "Cabbage Patch sales will still be good for awhile, but then everybody will have them and the sales will fall off because no one will want them anymore," said Oldham. Items popular at Christmas time are ones new and different, according to Oldham. "They're the ones that the manufacturers play up on television. I'm just surprised that once they play them up in advertising that they don't back them up more with an ample supply of the things," he said. Coleco, the company which makes Cabbage Patch, started doll to shipping the snub-nose- d the United States in June. By the end of the year it expects to have shipped 2.5 million of the dolls. That's more than the number of live babies born in this country during the same time. The dolls are made in Hong China and are being put out at a rate of 200,000 a week. And although Coleco keeps promising there will be enough dolls for everyone tell that to the mother who stood in line for eight hours to get one doll or to the store clerk who was fired for "hoarding" four of the dolls or to the little boy or girl who won't get one on Christmas. Even though there are no more Care Bears to be found, any kind of Teddy Bear is selling well, Lye said, "The standard old stuffed bears are doing well because it's some anniversary of the bear. And there are plenty of those to go around." In past years Star Wars figures have been popular items, but both Oldham and Lye agreed that this years sales are not comparable to previous. "Star Wars figures are kinda dead. The only thing I've heard is selling are the Ewoks and we haven't been able to get them in," said Lye. But if you're a parent who just won't give up and just has to ask have a Cabbage Patch around. There are rumors of a Black Market for the dolls even here in Happy Valley. And, if all else fails, there are more rumors someone in Spanish Fork has a pattern for the dolls and is manufacturing them by hand.
