The Cubs haven't been better than .500 since 1972 and Lee Elia begins Jus second season at the Chicago helm coming off a 9 disaster last year. Obviously, the Penguin hasn't looked toward the outfield. Right fielder Leon Durham, who may be shifted to center, could be baseball's next big star. The hit .312, with 22 homers, 90 RBI and 28 stolen bases in '82, although his glove is ss fiflh-plac- erratic. The other two outfield spots art wide open, though, with rookie er, Mel Hall vying with veterans Gary Woods, Scot Thompson, Wayne Nordhagen, Jerry Morales and Jay Johnstone. That's a lot of ifs. Despite the presence of Lee Smith (17 saves) and crafty Willie Hernandez (10 saves) in the bullpen, the Cubs' staff finished last in the NL in ERA and posted a paltry nine complete games. Ferguson Jenkins, 39, is the only reliable starter. hard-throwi- STRENGTHS A Cure for Spring Fishing Fever By MIKE HEMINGWAY I finally got a day off on Tuesday, so I decided to take a trip down to Utah Lake and try my hand at catching some walleye. By the time I got everything together, and all of my jobs done, there was not much time left for fishing, but I went anyway. When I got to the lake at the Geneva ouUet, the wind was blowing up a storm. There were breakers on the shore that were as big as the waves on Waikiki in Hawaii. The wind was so strong that a good cast was likely to come straight back at you. I did not get in a lot of fishing. While at the lake, I decided to check out the various fishing spots along the shore. The Orem Boat Ramp is still accessible, but only car top boats or canoes can be launched. The water is over the top of the jetties in one area, so if you are thinking of going fishing there, take along your waders. Utah Lake State Park is closed to all traffic. If you want to fish along the jetties, you have to get to them by water. OUTLOOK-Pitch- ing wiU remain very shaky unless several newcomers produce, but team should score more runs with Cey's clutch bat. Should definitely stay out of division cellar and could move up to fourth. Dq them out. Besides, I would like to catch a few trout before I have to pay additional money for a trout busy. The walleye are hitting in some areas, but the fishing has generally been slow. The high water and inaccessible areas will probably limit the walleye catch this season. Before long, the ice will be off Deer Creek and the fishing for perch and walleye will continue up there. When the. water warms up to 45 or 50 degrees, the perch will move into the shallows to spawn. A good area to fish will be the willows near Charleston Bay. The perch will be there and the angling should be good. If you happen to fish Deer Creek, remember that the lake is only open to the taking of perch and walleye. All other species have to be thrown back. If you like to stream fish, there are several places that are open. My office is near the Provo River, and I am tempted every time I go to work. The water looks pretty good right now, and I plan to fish it in the next few days. I received some new lures and flies in the mail, and I am anxious to try lake are closed, there is little chance of fishing the jetties this year. Even though the lake is high, there is still some good fishing. The Division of Wildlife Resources reports that the white bass are hitting this week. They are schooling in the harbors and stream outlets. The best success has come by getting offshore a couple of hundred yards. This means that you have to use a boat or a float tube. The fish are also being taken at Lincoln Beach and at some of the rocky points on the west shore. If you have never fished for white bass, you ought to take a morning and go down to the lake for some fun. The fish will hit small jigs or spinners and will give you a fun fight when hooked. The bass are a schooling fish.'sp once you get into a school, you should be able to keep up the action. White bass are fun to fish for when you have your kids along. They can cast out and reel in all they want, and they will probably get into the action while keeping stars in Durham Young and Sandberg: solid veterans Cey and Buckner at the corners; Davis a comer at backstop; Smith's heat out of bullpen. WEAKNESSES Arizona State could have a better starting staff; Bowa sliding at both and in field, outfield unsettled beyond Elate a.m.-- 9 p.m. Orem Blasts Payson, 17-- 7 n Kurt Pulham drove in three runs while Rick Fowler and Brad Eagar drove in two apiece to pace Orem to a 7 baseball victory over Payson earlier this week. The Tigers sneaked the game in 17-- between rain and snowstorms and combined nine hits with five Lion miscues to score their runs. Pulham had three of the hits while Fowler had two and Eagar had a two-ru- n triple. YC3UB. 140 03- - 7 7 S Payson 028 7 Orem 0 Money, Worthen (3) and Swain; Marchant and Eagar. They scored fewer runs than any team in the league and the pitching staff ranked eighth in earned run average. You don't need a Confucius around to tell you that you can't be a winner with those numbers. This year should be better but only because it can't get much worse. None of the regulars had an exceptional year in 1982 and it's unlikely that will happen again. Then, too, the club should have more speed this year with the addition of outfielder Gary Redus to the lineup. Redus, a .333 hitter with 54 stolen bases at Indianapolis last season, will bat leadoff and Eddie Milner, another speedster, will hit No. 2. The Reds are counting on them to set the table for the likes of Dave Concepcion, Dan Driessen and Cesar Cedeno.
