"The association's membership throughout Utah will give surplus food to the Rescue Sen. DC. WASHINGTON, Orrin Hatch recently praised the Utah Restaurant Association for its decision to give surplus food to Utah's needy. "This is the kind of program that I wish could be nationwide," Hatch told his colleagues in the U.S. Senate Friday. "I compli on (R-Uta- Student Attitudes By CONNIE BARKER Executive Vice President Orrm Area Chamber of Commerce The following article is a report by Marion Gomm, Continuing Education Coordinator, and a member of the Orem Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. The report was prepared by the Education committee for the membership of the Orem Chamber of Commerce. We feel the report emphasizes the need for education of the general public about the private enterprise system and the way our country's economic system works. While the Alpine School District is teaching students, the Education Committee will be studying ways to distribute information to the adult population. Ninety-eig- percent ht of stu- dents surveyed at Orem City's junior and senior high schools feel that their community is a good place to live according to the results of a study done in conjunction with Free Enterprise Week activities. The Education Committee of the Orem Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Alpine School District surveyed eighth and 10th grade students as to their familiarity with the concepts of free enterprise such as scarcity, choice and competition and their feelings about business. This was a duplicate survey to that given to Orem High and UTC students in 1979 except that the 1983 students were specifically chosen because they had not yet fulfilled the high school graduation requirement of a semester course in which the curriculum is heavily oriented toward economics and free enterprise. A follow-u- p of this study will be done after ej- - these same students have completed the required course. Sixty percent of sophomore and 62 percent of eighth graders tested feel that some form of government control is necessary to keep prices fair. Similarly, 56 percent of sophomores and 49 percent of eighth grade respondents believe that what the company wants to charge influences prices more than what the customer is willing to pay. Prices going up faster than wages is the major cause of inflation according to 64 percent of sophomores and 68 percent of eighth graders, and most business firms could not raise wages 10 cents an hour without raising prices say 56 percent of sophomores and 41 percent of eighth graders. In comparing the scoring of the 1979 sophomores and the 1983 group, the present sophomores feel much more strongly the need for government price control and that business cannot raise wages without raising prices. Their feeling that the greatest influence on prices is what the company wants to charge is the same as the 1979 Mission and Salvation Army in Salt Lake City and similar organizations around the state," Hatch said.
