National Wildlife Week was set as the first week in spring. With it comes the hope of warmer weather (it seems to be getting worse instead of better), the need to be getting the garden ready, the pressure to finish your income taxes, and the hope of coming outdoor adventures. One event that happens the first week of spring is the observance of National Wildlife Week. This year, the Wildlife week runs from March 20 to the 26th. National Wildlife Week was first suggested by the National Wildlife Federation to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. The president liked II needs of conservation and wildlife. The theme for National Wildlife Week this year is "THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND" "Public Land Belongs To All Of Us." One of the goals for the week is to educate American citizens to the fact that of 740 million they are acres of federal land. Governor Scott Matheson recently signed a proclamation declaring that the state of Utah would participate in observing the week. No matter where you live in the state, you are not very far from open areas and many varieties of animal and plant life. Take a quick trip to the foothills and watch the deer. Stop at the lake or an open stream and catch some fish. Watch the sky and enjoy the abundance and variety of birds that live in our area. As the theme says, "THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND." Some of the federally administered lands include national parks, national monuments, national forets, wilderness areas, and recreation areas. Many of the federal lands are' located in the western states. Almost 70 percent of the land in Utah is public land. Most of the prime hunting and fishing in the state is on land administered by the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. If you like to hike, camp, hunt, fish, or just picnic, you will probably spend most of your time on lands that are public lands.
