(UPIl -F- a half years after 43 men died in the nation's bloodiest prison riot, the investigation of the Attica rebellion has officially ended. New York Supreme Court Justice Carman F. Ball closed the books on the September. 1971 uprising Tuesday when he dismissed the two special Wyoming County grand juries that had been investigating the riot. Ball dismissed the panels at the request of chief Attica Prosecutor Alfred J. Scotti. who said "there is no additional work for them." The original grand jury w as seated in November. 1971. while the second panel had been in session since April of 1974. Ball said he was discharging the grand juries "subject to the call of the court." explaining they could still be called back into session if necessary. However, he added, "I do not expect that lo happen." The long investigation resulted in 63 indictments and two jury convictions. John Hill is serving a sentence of 20 years to life for the slaying of an Attica corrections officer and Charles Pernasilice is free on bail while appealing his conviction for second degree assault. All cases except the indictment of fugitive Mariano Gonzales, who is accused of murdering a fellow inmate during the riot, were dismissed last month at Scotti's request. But Tuesday he said he had decided that neither of those matters should be submitted to the grand juries. organizations. The targets included such widely ranging groups as the Ku Klux Klan, the Black Panthers, the American Communist Party, Students for a Democratic Society and the Socialist Workers Party. Many of the organizations have become known through releases of FBI COINTELPRO files as a result of demands made under the Freedom of Information Act. t The FBI's first disclosure consisted of a telegram Hoover sent on April 28, 1971, ordering a halt of the campaigns. Hoover provided for continuing the program in specific cases where warranted, but he would approve each case. However. FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley has repeatedly denied in public statements and congressional testimony that any COINTELPRO activity has continued. mmmmm mm mm mm e Furnishings Daily."
