Show Rogers Has All NFL Scouts Seek In a Running Back S5lJnl Mim r . , - L Jnl November Sunday 9. 1980. THE HERALD. Provo. f L'tah-P- ag, I 4 By RICK GOSSEUN UPI 5parti Writer - KANSAS CITY, Mo. UPI) George Rogers of South Carolina has you could possibly evything waai in running back except the label "franchise." And he might even have that by the time the National i i kovo w 461 W. 300 Football League draft rolls around next April. Rogers has rushed for 18 straight games and has amassed 1,257 yards this season to rank second in the nation. He also has 4,434 career rushing e NCAA chart, a yards to rank eighth on the mere nine yards behind former Texas Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell. But Rogers is not yet the sure No. 1 overall pick of the NFL that a Campbell (1978). a Tony Dorsett U97-7- ) or a Billy Sims (1980) was. "You could almost guarantee that Dorsett, Campbell and Sims were all going to be the top pick," said Player Personnel Director Les Miller of the Kansas City Chiefs, who spent two days scouting Rogers and the Gamecocks last week. "And there was even a little bit of talk that Dorsett might not be the first guy taken. But by the time of the draft, all of the doubts were eliminated on Dorsett. And they could all be eliminated on Rogers, & AKXiiun fo:x 1 109 3742S50 LlMl 750-760- 8fji If J fff 1 m 100-yar- d OSkEM SPAIUSH F02K 985 So. State 375 North Main 224 1S44 798-376- 0 all-tim- too. "I would say there's a very good chance he could be the (first) guy taken. He's going to be ranked up there. It might depend what that first team needs -a- BflBlfltBETOBflBS lthough everybody has a need for a George Rogers. If he's picked No. 1, no one is going to be surprised and everybody is going to say it was a great choice. "I like his size, his speed, his ability, his instincts, his attitude, his work habits...everything. If he's around when we pick, I guarantee you we'll take him. I don't know of any team he could go to and not be an immediate success." 215 pounds and runs a 4.6 in the Rogers is dash. He gained 141 yards in a game against Southern Cal this season, 142 against Michigan and 168 against Georgia all traditionally strong collegiate defensive teams. He rushed for his season-hig- h 224 yards against Duke and .108 more yards against Wichita State, despite playing only 1 quarters. "He gets four yards where there are none," said Miller. "He just gets yards. He's a North-Sout- h runner. He's more similar to Campbell than Sims and Dorsett in that respect. He's a power guy, although he's not as big as Earl. But he's like Earl in that he takes a lot of punishment and keeps coming at you. "You should have seen the Southern Cal film. He took an unbelievable amount of punishment and still had the strength to break away for a touchdown late in the game."
