Redshirt seniors Jacob Buhler and Chase Englestead have been selected to lead the men's team while redshirt senior Karinne Bentley and redshirt junior Mary Nothum will strive to lead the women's squad. "All four of these athletes have been here at UVU for a while now," Houle said. "They all redshirted last season so that they could participate at full NCAA Division I status for at least this season and be eligible for the opportunity to make it to Regional and the NCAA Championships. They will aff be great leaders for our younger athletes." Buhler, Englestead and Bentley are all entering their fifth year at Utah Valley while Nothum enters her fourth. All four captains have had great careers for the Wolverines as they've all consistently been the top finishers in nearly every meet for UVU. The UVU season begins at the Wyoming Invitational in Laramie, Wyo., on Sept. 4. NFL Animal advocates want focus on dogs, notVick PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia Eagles tailgaters will be out in force long before Michael Vick takes on the field today. So will animal advocates the other side of town. Dog lovers are throwing a competing tailgate party for the 2nd Chance Dogs a pointed reference to Vick's second campaign chance in the NFL to increase awareness of and encourage adoption of rescued pit bulls. The initiative, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was launched after the Eagles signed Vick, who served 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting ring. "We need to speak for them." For Cosby, Vick's arrival in Philadelphia has put a needed spotlight on the types of cruelty cases her agency deals with every day and that's where she wants it: On the dogs, not the dogfighter. "For us, this whole thing has just reinforced how hard we have to work at the work we're doing every day," she said. The signing of Vick two weeks ago sparked protests from fans and animal lovers appalled that the Eagles would bring in a player involved in fighting, hanging and drowning dogs. Some threatened to boycott the team; protesters waved signs outside Eagles practices; newspapers and radio talk shows spewed endless commentary. Supporters countered that the three-tim-e Pro Bowl quarterback has paid his debt to society and deserves a second chance. It remains to be seen what the crowd response will be when Vick takes the field for his first game in more than two years today against Jacksonville; so far, no formal protests have been announced. I Broncos sign QB Martin after injury to Simms: With backup Chris Simms hobbled by an ankle injury, the Denver Broncos moved to bolster their depth at quarterback Wednesday by signing free agent Ingle Martin. Simms suffered a high ankle sprain when Seahawks pass rusher Nick Reed fell on his left ankle during the third quarter of Saturday's 3 loss at Seattle, and the Broncos have not said how long Simms is expected to be sidelined. The loss of Simms left starter Kyle Orton and rookie Tom Brandstater as the only healthy quarterbacks on the Broncos roster. 27-1- I Ryan chooses rookie Sanchez as starting QB: The future is now for the new face of the New York Jets, Cougars TODAY Girls Soccer (Ms Television The Dallas Cowboys have announced the release standing-room-onltickets for BYLfs football season opener against Oklahoma on Sept. 5. Sanchez was selected as the team's starting quarterback by coach Rex Ryan on Wednes day, making him the first rookie to open a season under center for the Jets. The fifth overall draft pick out of bouthern California will make his regular-seaso- n debut at Houston on Sept. 13. "I feel the best move for our franchise is to go with Mark Sanchez as our quarterback," Ryan said, adding that it was solely his decision. Ryan, who made the announcement after practice, said early in training camp he'd like to make a decision on a starter by the Jets' third preseason game. Sanchez showed him enough in two games to beat Kellen Clemens for the job. "I think Mark gives us the best opportunity to win," Ryan said, "and I think that's what I owe this franchise." The Jets' next preseason game is Saturday night against the Giants. 1 49ers' Hill leaves practice after 1 pass: Shaun Hill left the San Francisco 49ers' practice after throwing one pass Wednesday morning but said he is fine and will be ready to play in this weekend's exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys. Hill strained his lower back during practice Tuesday and received treatment. "It was still there today," coach Mike Singletary said. "He probably could have pushed himself through practice, but I told him he didn't need to do that. Let the other guys get the reps and let's go." Damon Huard and rookie Nate Davis, the team's draft choice, alternated at quarterback the remainder of practice. Hill shrugged off the injury. "I'll be fine," he said. fifth-roun- d I Ravens TE Smith sidelined with pulled hamstring: Baltimore Ravens tight end Li. Smith could miss the rest of the preseason with a pulled hamstring, and defensive tackle Kelly Gregg might also be sidelined for an extended stretch because of a shoulder injury. Smith hurt his leg in Monday's 3 win over the New York Jets. He will be held out of Saturday's game against Carolina and might miss the finale against Atlanta on Sept. 3. "It's a concern," coach John Harfoaugh said Wednesday. "It's a hamstring pull It's going to take him a little while. I don't know how long. You never know with those things. It's in a different spot from the other one.
