Unfortunately, these are also the same waters which provide the most rapid fish growth and provide a large portion of our creel success. Now with the early ice breakup cn seme of these lakes the news Is good as very little winter kill has shown up. Our big Strawberry Lake Is a prime example. There was practically no fish loss there as the ice cleared a couple of weeks ago. Many smaller lakes over the state are always in question until the ice goes out each spring. Those at lower elevations now cleared are all on the plus side to date. Given some overdue warm days the ones at higher elevations should pull Good news for through. To angler, it is fluid poetry that touches taunt nerves. Awed by their speed and grace as they rush the river currants to leap and climb the fish ladders only to be trapped, visitors to Strawberry Reservoir exclaim to one another, "Oh, look at that one!" While the last sylable is still audible yet another brightly marked fish dares the torrent of water in the traps and leaps against the currant in order to fulfill the timeless urge to spawn. Standing within inches of the fish ladder to view the ancient spectacle in the dimming light of dusk, spectators are often drenched to the skin by the splashing cutthroat. Even the cold mountain water cannot dampen their enthusiasm. For hours they stand extoling the strength and beauty of the fish. In the evening hours and throughout the night the parade of fish continues. Their numbers seem endless, by the tens and hundreds they pass, fighting their way into the fish traps where they will be held until they can be transferred to the spawning house located near the mouth of the Strawberry River. Within the next few days their numbers will have grown into the thousands. From these fish, laying tranquil in the spawning house raceways, will come some ten million eggs, one of the single largest sources of pur strain cutthroat eggs in the world. The forces that trigger the ancient mating migration remain for most part a mystery. Fisheries biologists agree that water temperature and periods . of Cutthroat Eggs Is Major Source Sfrawberry of longer daylight, after the frigid chills of winter, fill the fish with the spawning urge. When the fish are allowed to reproduce naturally, which in Strawberry the great majority do, they travel upstream into tL many streams and rivers until they locate suitablegravel beds where they will make their spawning nests, which are called redds. The female then digs a slight depression in the gravel with her tail. Frequently the males in the area will assist her in this endeavor. These redds or pockets in the gravel will become the ultimately depository for her eggs. When the fmale i ripe with eggs she lies on her side over the redd with the male opposite her. The eggs from the female and the milt from the male fish are discharged simultaneously into the redd. Often the male can be seen assisting her by bumping her side to speeden the release of the eggs. The average adult cutthroat will lay between one and two thousand eggs. The eggs will hatch out in approximately 25 days, depending upon water again in the western Aleutians only a small portion of the and along the northern Asiatic spawning fish in the reservoir. Each year wildlife resources coast. Today their numbers are somewhat limited. The charge is that the deer tag will need be cut off from the license when used, not torn away from the old perforated line. So you haven't a knife you shouldn't be out deer hunting anyway. Wild turkey gobblers take the spotlight as Utah's first hunting season for 1972 moves toward its second weekend. The spring gobbler hunt runs three weekends from April 29 through May 14. On the plus side is the new, tough material they are made of and the fact that they are almost waterproof. And no more "accidental" separation of the tag from the license which has been a real problem for both the hunter and our wildlife people in the past. No problem catching a mess of rainbow on our first trip to Flaming Gorge this year. Herb Smart our companion and we boated to the Hideout area of the lake below Sheep Creek. Local experts said a black tiny tot jig fly was the thing to use and it worked cast toward the shallows near the banks and retrieved to the boat. Also included is part of San Juan County north and east of U.S. Highway 163, State Highway 46, and the Lisbon Valley Road. Legal weapons for the hunt are bow and broadhead arrows, muzzle loading rifles, centerfire rifles, or shotguns no larger than 10 gauge and no smaller than 20 gauge. Shot sizes larger than BB or smaller than number 6 are Turkey hunters must have a game or combination license and a Spring Wild Turkey Permit. The permits are $3 each and must be obtained from any Division of Wildlife Resources office before hunting. 1972 small were doing as well or better trolling or bank fishing in that area. Worms and cheese from the bank, trolling flatfish, and two fellows just dunking a crawler over the side of the boat and drifting with the wind. In fact, the last two had the biggest fish we saw which looked to be above five pounds. Our guess is that this kind and place of fishing will hold up well for another 30 to 40 days when the surface waters warm up and the fish go deeper maybe like fifty feet down as they did last summer. All of which sys this should be a good trip to make prior to the June 3 beginning of the regular season. needs. Since gobblers are difficult to bag in the fall, it has become a widely accepted management practice to hunt them in the spring when they are more easily located. The spring hunting season begins after most mating is completed. At this time, hens are incubating eggs and their secretive behavior protects them from disturbance by hunters. reports say the April 29, "Scouting Keep America Beautiful Day" was a great success as some 10 million Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, their leaders and many others joined in a nationwide effort to rid the country's public places of trash and litter.
