(UPI)-N- otre Dame's Joe Theismann surpassed the career records of the legendary George Glpp and latterday hero Terry Hanratty Saturday, throwing three touchdown passes and running up 381 yards total offense in a 4 Irish victory over Pittsburgh. It was the seventh straight win for the unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Irish and the third loss in eight games for Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh actually had the 3 in the second lead at period. But then Theismann rallied the Irish for two more touchdowns and a 5 lead at the half. Theismann connected on a pass to Dennis Allan to put the Irish ahead to stay, then hit Ed Gulyas on a scoring throw. Then in the last period, he combined with Mike pass play Creaney on a for a touchdown, the longest aerial tor Notre Dame this season. When Pittsburgh managed to keep his receivers covered Theismann took off around end on running plays. In eight carries he gained 97 yards, including runs of 42, 21 and 15 46-1- 14-1- 24-1- rd rd fullback John CieszitowsH, plunging from the two and then from the one yard line. Notre Dame made Pittsburgh's s cores relatively easy. They yielded the Panthers a kickoff return by Dave Garnett to the Irish 45, and then allowed John Hogan to complete three straight passes -- 30 yards to Dennis Harris, seven to Steve Moyer and five for the touchdown to Bill Pilconis. On the second score, the Irish gave up the ball to Pittsburgh on the Notre Dame 35 on a fumble, advanced them to the Notre Dame 11 on a holding penalty and to the one on a pass interference penalty before Tony Esposito plunged for the score, more gave him a career total performance yards of 4,853, compared to 4,833 for Gipp, and he wnind up with 4,741 yards total offense compared to Hanratty 's previous Irish cord of ' re- 4,738. Total offense includes yards running and passing, while total performance includes pass receptions and punt and kickoff return yardage. Allan also scored the first touchdown for Notre Dame on a three-yar- d run, while Bill Ban got the second for the Irish on d a plunge after a Pittsburgh fumble gave Notre Dame the ball on the Panther two-yar- 40. It's also a sentimental thing with De Vicenzo, in whose honor the tournament is being played this year. He won the individual title in the first World Cup in Canada in 1953. His partner this year is only 24 years old and walks with a limp from a childhood sickness which left his right fool partially crippled. Stockton, a surprise winner of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tournament this year, is one of the most confident young men in the U.S. tour and he and the voluble Trevino should make a colorful and chatty twosome. Jacklin, winner of both the U.S. and British Open tournaments this year and considered Britain's best golfer of the century, may find the narrow fairways to his distaste since he is a long hitter who sometimes tends to spray his shots in the Nicklaus tradition. Harold Henning and Gary Player, who will not play this year, won the tournament in 1965, breaking a string of five straight victories by the U.S. The two Hennings figure to be high in the final standings this year. Among other top teams competing are Australia (Bruce Devlin-Davi- d Graham), Japan o (Takaai Yasuda) and Thialand (Sukree Onsham-UthThabvibul). Onsham finished fourth in the tournament last year. He held the lead in the early holes of the final round but faded under pressure from Trevino and De ly De Vicenzo lost the 1968 Masters Golf Tournament after signing an incorrect scorecard in a monumental muff that brought him fan letters from Singapore to Seattle. It probably gained him more notoriety than if he had won. Despite a few initial tears in the clubhouse at Augusta, Ga., two years ago, the world traveler with the ready smile has never lost his cool or his touch on the greens. De Vicenzo and minute belter Vicente "Chino" Fernandez are high among the favorites for the team title, won by the United States in eight of the last 10 e years. Others are Lee Tre Stockton of the U.S., Tony Jacklin-Pete- r Butler of England and Allan and Harold Henning of South Africa. Trevino who has won two tournaments in the U.S. this year and finished second in the British Open behind Jacklin won the individual title last year as he and Orville Moody claimed the team trophy. De Vicenzo finished only a stroke in humid behind Trevino Singapore. "I think we can make a good showing," said the De Vicenzo "but the world's top golfers are playing here. There are many teams who can win." But De Vicenzo will be playing on the short 6,700-yarpar 72 course of the famed Vicenzo. ever-mode- st It Kono-Haru- overall, and tied for the lead in the Big Ten with a 0 mark, got to the Wisconsin 1 on a pass from Ron Maciejow-sk- i o Larry Zelina. One of the many theories which may or may not have any more validity than any of the others is that the club has had it too easy in the regular season in recent years. But this year, things have changed. The Cowboys are in a fight and they know it. The club is currently engaged in a four-wa- y battle for the NFC Eastern crown. Rainy skies greeted hunters Saturday as they unlimbered their shotguns in pursuit of the elusive feathered game birds during the first of the pheasant and quail season throughout Utah. The weather didn't help hunters any, as the nimrods also faced a continuation of a bird slump which has plagued the state's fields for the past three of four years. Biologist Darrei! H.
