Senate Comes to Grips With Erosion of Power Dedicated te the Progress And Growth of Central Utah Page 22-T- HE Sunday, June 7, HERALD, Provo, Utah by STEVE GERSTEL WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The Senate apparently has decided to retrieve its vanishing role in the decision to make war. As it was wont to do, the 1970 Tying a 'Bell' on Earthquakes far-dista- nt less-publiciz- results of man's assault upon his environment. But in case we need reminding, nature is far from a passive victim in this relationship. She is still largely unpredictable and uncontrolled and capable of a violence that dwarfs human capabilities for destruction. Peruvian The earthquake demolished a city of 80,000 and scores of smaller communities, took at least 1,000 lives the full toll may and disrupted never be known communications and other essential facilities in a vast, thoroughly shaken-uarea from the Pacific to the Andes Mountains that will be a long time in recovering from the damage. All this in a matter of seconds and without warning, as has been man's experience with the moving earth throughout history. It is just possible, however, that a change six-fo- - p How times and tastes change not to mention the cost of keeping up with both. Funny once - yes. Funny twice - no. Most people know that I enjoy fishing. Although I don't get to it as often as I would like, I always look forward to the next time. Before we had children, I use to charge up and down the streams and rivers with a fly rod and a box of spinners. With children, that type of fishing is out lest you be fishing one of the little stinkers out of the swift current So, to continue the enjoyment of fishing I had to change my mode to that of "still" fishing ... (a method commonly known by another name that we no longer use.) This method involves a great deal of sitting and sunning yourself on a bank or from a boat that is anchored. (And now that I'm older I'm convinced this beats racing up and down streams and rivers. ) quak detection system may be functioning in 10 to 20 years, according to the more optimistic researchers. In a disaster such as Peru's, it promises to be literally a lifesaver. The quake, and consequent physical damage cannot be prevented that requires improved construction techniques and, more simply and wisely,, probably, man's avoidance of un-- i stable terrain in building his cities. But with sufficient warning, the d populations of areas can take precautions, or be evacuated. One of the nice points about this! very promising effort to master the environment is that man is seeking to learn about his environment and adapt to it, not change it and, in the process, probably damage it. And that is how it should be. Hits Trend To Open On Sunday Editor Herald: It is with alarm that we notice that most food firms in the Provo and Orem area have jumped on the bandwagon of Sunday selling. It would seem that many of them have just been waiting for the slightest excuse to open their doors on the Sabbath and if last Saturday is any indication (Memorial Day) they intend to be open on every holiday. I would like to tell these operators that I for one deplore these activities of theirs and do wish that here in Zion at least we could observ; that Sabbath Day without the necessity of regulation by secular law. I find that by this letter and by not patronizing those who are open on Sundays are the only ways that I can protest such action. I would like to say to those who are open, that I will drive miles out of my way or live off my storage before 1 will give them any more of my business and I don't mean just on Sundays either. I mean all days of the quake-threatene- - university. By LINDA BUSSIO America is a land of opportunity. Her eyes are turned to the future. Her hopes lie in the youth because the youth are the leaders of tomorrow. Her goals are those of equality, freedom, and justice. We, the residents of Provo Qty, would be the first to uphold and defend these ideals in theory; but most members of the community fail to uphold these ideals in actual practice. I am speaking specifically of one of these ideals that of equality. Provo High School students are not receiving the social equality they warrant. Because we have Brigham Young University in our community, the majority of Provo residents apparently choose to support the university in its activities. Of course, some of our Provo High activities cannot compare with BYU's on the basis of size, splendor, or sophistication, but many of our activities do measure up and in some cases even surpass those of the university. Naturally many of our activities and events are not meant for community support, but the ones in which the most work and preparation go are indeed intended for community interest and backing. Take for example our Shakespearean Festival. Ray Jones has established a reputation all over the state for his Shakespearean plays. He has been the only director to produce the winning state play three years consecutively. The community supports our plays a little better than our other activities, but not nearly as much as it should. Most of the adult members of the community who do attend are V t of the performers or occupational connected with education and the high school itself. The community as a whole does not support our drama department which certainly warrants all the backing and praise we can give it. Our music department has also made some parents commendable accomplishments. Several weeks before school recessed for the summer, Provo High hosted a jazz concert featuring some of the best bands in the western states. The attendance of the community was absolutely nil. Surely we have more jazz fans than that. On Easter, the whole music department participated in the production of the "Messiah." The attendance at this production consisted of parents of the performers. Homecoming is another example. In Orem, "Orem Tiger" signs are seen everywhere. At Orem's major games the leading city officials attend, not to mention a vast majority of the adult community. In Provo the reserved section of seats (reserved for the community) are taken by students because there is no one else to fill them. At the beginning of the year, every store window is covered with "Welcome Back Cougars" and "Let's Go Blue!" I ve never seen a "Good Luck Green" v a "Let's Go Provo ! " And yet we shop at the same places, spend the same money, and provide patronage. We even win our games. Even our Junior Prom which is the biggest and nicest event of the year failed to catch even an inch of space in the newspaper prior to the event itself. I noticed, however, a full front society page dedicated to BYU's Junior Prom. A picture of the PHS prom queen did appear in the paper afterward. Some of the fault could be ours. Perhaps we , i week. I would like to commend those stores in the valley which have taken a stand on closing on Sunday and holidays. I would certainly hope that those who profess to' be good Latter-da- y Saints would refrain from patronizing those who deem the dollar more important than the Law of the Lord. Many thanks Editor Herald: Recently I received a letter in response to the closing of the Jefferson School in Springville. I would like to tell the peple of the school district that this letter said nothing of the good and help that the school has done for over 400 children over the three years of being open. The only things that this letter mentioned were things like this: "We are one of the poorer school districts," "high tuition fees for public school students," "fewer funds for library books per student," "to keep a lot of these experimental programs operating like this one at Jef- ferson they would have to raise our taxes and the people wouldn't like it." These are only a few of many, I don't think that people would cry at all if their taxes were raised to support a program such as this if that's what the money would be spent for. But you know as well as I that the first thing that would come out of these taxes would be a salary raise for the high officials are running the district and then what's left would be used for the schools. I still maintain that they could keep the school open and not close it down. And it's not because of the lack of funds that Paul Harvey King of the Road No Longer King BERRY'S WORLD two-thir- eight-year-o- ld hard-of-wh- impersonal Praises Provo Memorial to War Veterans Editor Herald: The Provo City Cemetery was May 29 in the Herald ' This almost as seems to be an understatement. You should see us, all six of us stretched out on a bank like a bunch of "Oakies" (if Coach Hudspeth will pardon the expression,) drowning worms on the end of a line. It's quite a sight. But to tell you the truth, enjoy it ! I enjoy having my family with me and I enjoy the relaxation. Funny thing about it too my 'ol ulcerated tummy never seems to bother me during the hours I spend fishing. Herbert Hoover knew what he was talking about when he said, "While fishing, there can be great rejoicing, because you know you don't have to decide a darned thing until next week." And of course I'm a firm believer in the message found on an Assyrian tablet of 2000 B.C., which said, "The gods do not subtract it's closing, but the truth of the from the allotted ' span of men's lives the hours spent fishing." matter, in my opinion, is that the school board and the superintendent don't want to keep it If yon think I'm leading up to something, you're right. Jensen A funny thing happened at home the other night when Double N answered the telephone. The voice at the other end asked, "Is Jane there?" Double N replied, "No, I think you have the wrong number." One or two minutes later the phone rang again and for the second time, Double N answered. The voice, different from the first, asked "If Jane was there?" This time, Double N asked the caller what number they were trying to reach. The voice gave our correct telephone number to which Double N replied, "I'm sorry but there is no Jane at this number." After hanging the phone back in the cradle for the second time, Double N comfortably settled back in her chair and continued to or was it 'Ladies Home Journal'? read 'Marquis DeSade' Anyway, no sooner had she settled back when the phone rang for the third time.
