Show Ttandij,irrtH,lMl THE SENTINEL 2 Pag Ladies open Beetdiggers take track at powerlifting title niniflds Jordan Jordan High School successfully defended its high school powerlifting title last Mar. 18, taking team honors in the second annual Jordan High Invitational Powerlifting tournament. Jordan ended up with four individual first places and two second places to take first, while Kearns was second with two firsts, Bingham and Brighton tied for third with one first place and three seconds each, and Hillcrest was next with one first place. A total of 73 lifters took part. Individual trophy winners included Kearns' Ferrel PEIGHT DIVISION AS THE MEETS OUTSTANDING LIFTER: Jordan's Robert Young was named the outstanding bench presser; the best dead lift competitor was Jordan's Paul Valenzuela; and the best squat lift participat was listed as Bingham's Steve Kubitz. Individual weight class champions were listed as the following: Robert Young of Jordan in the 135 pound class with a weight total of 845 pounds; Mike Brown of Jordan in the 149 class with an 880 total; Dennis BoLrge of Bingham at 159 with a total of 950 pounds; John Dut-so- n of Bingham tied with Todd Karren of Brighton In the 169 pound class, both lifting 965 pounds, but Dut-so- n was given first because his body weight was less than Karren 's; Harold Mortensen of Kearns edged out Jordan's Clay Games by five pounds with a total of 1055 in the 179 class; Jordan's Jerry Richardson took the 189' title with a 1225 pound total; at 199 Hillcrest's John Hunsaker won with a 980 total; Jordan's Paul Valensuela won at 209 with an 1060 total; and Ferrel Price of Kearns was first at heavyweight. "We are really pleased with the meet in terms of the number and quality of the kids taking part," said meet director and Jordan football coach Rick Bojak. "We feel we tjave the top high school weightlifting facility in the state and this was a good way for us to show it off." In 16 and 17 year old competition the 114 pound class was won by Tad Millard with a 280 pound total; Bruce Jensen's total of 250 pounds gave him first in the 132 class; and Ken Burton ended up a 335 total and first in the 165 pound class. The tourney's top lifter award was given to Tadd Millard. All of the above lifters are from the south county area.
