Beckstead was born in South Jordan, April 2, 1901, to Byrum Henry and Annie Jane . Holt Beckstead. He married Mary Ellen Seal on Feb. 23, 1921 in the Salt Lake Temple, after which he served an LDS mission in the western states. They had four sons and a daughter, Junior, Max, Lee, Seal, and Mary. Beckstead has always had a love for horses. In the 1930s and 40s, he would enter a lot of horse pulling contests. In the evenings after work, all the neighbors would come to see him practice pulling the horses. He won many contests and went to many places to pull his teams. Today he still has a lot to do with horses. He has a surrey, and a covered wagon that he pulls with Shetland ponies. He has had the privilege of giving rides to many dignitaries, including Gov. Calvin Rampton and his wife, when in parades and other civic! functions. He has had his horses and wagon at and schools, parks, reunions for children and adults to ride. .
