Show 9B Thursday, December THE GREEN SHEET 31, 1987 Valley High Offers Opportunities For Students To Grow by Sherma Lind Yeates Green Sheet Staff Writer SANDY. Principal Clyde Mcllberg heads the staff at Valley high school and he lists the most important goal of the school as bringing students to a point where they feel good about themselves. "Our teachers will take time with our students. They love working with the kids. The students say 'The teacher likes me.' There is a a real change in attitude." A second important goal of Valley high school according to Mellbcrg, is to have the students leave and be prepared to function in society. Principal Mellberg says, "Some of the students have never had a taste of success. At our school we give them the feeling of success. Some of our students graduate from Valley. Some go on to college and vocations and some leave Valley and go back into the high schools. We work with our students to make them ready to be adults, that is just one little facet of education." The day at Valley high school begins at noon and continues until 8 p.m. four days a week and offers all courses that are needed for graduation. It is fully accredited with the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The unique hours allow students a better opportunity to hold a job and still attend school. Principal Mellberg says, "The students all came of their own free will. They like school. They come with a positive attitude." He points out that not everyone will choose an alternative school because there is no lunch program, no activities, no assemblies, no bells, no studentbody officers and no shop classes. He stresses that these things are an important part of any high school program for most students. He adds that Valley high school to an older usually appeals individual because it is run more like a college. "The responsibility is on the student," he said. Emphasis is on basic courses needed to graduate. Valley ..high serves about 750 students in the summer school program which schedules basic courses and which has a higher priced registration because the fund the registration helps program. Valley offers the option of working to a student who can School Lunch Fare JORDAN SCHOOL DISTRICT Elementary Jan. 4-- 1 Monday Cheeseburgers, french firas, peaches, dessert (us cherries), milk. cheese, pastrami or ham, but- tered green beans. "We do not like students to be on the streets." "Our staff is highly educated. Most of the staff have Masters degrees ad work in special education. "It is tough to be a teacher at Valley because there are no text books. The teachers make up their own curriculum," he noted. All students must pass the JCT test which is the guideline for the whole Jordan School District. There are sixteen teachers, two full time social workers, a vocational coordinator and a counselor." is a great "Jordan District supporter of Valley high school. We arc treated as is any other high school." "The Jordan says, Mcllberg District realizes that lots of kids are on their own. Some struggle hard to come to Valley. Sometimes their parents don't care if they come. "We are smaller and we can pick up and work with learning disorders and behavior problems and the staff does a very good job." counselor at Cathy Cooper, Valley, characterized the students at Valley by saying, "a lot are really, really bright. Most are not dropouts. Some are bored. Some are not as much interested in the social atmosphere of the regular high schools." Valley high school operates on a first name basis even with the teachers. There is an atmosphere of mutual says Cooper respect. simply, "Students are treated as if they are bright, which they are, and as if they are human beings. No one has to be here. "We see students really mature. There is never anything destructive in the atmosphere at Valley. The students like the way they are treated." She is quick to point out that those individuals who do criticize the school have never been to Valley. "We encourage students to bring their parents and friends down," she said. Cooperate dds, "These kids are to be applauded because they are trying so hard. The registration is only $5 for regular school and living situations are so difficult for some of the students they they have been unable to pay the registration. Some of the students work eight or nine hours and go to - school tor four hours." Mellbcrg and Cooper point out that most of the parents of students at Valley are really supportive. "Many are glad and grateful that their kids finally have found a can feel where they place successful, and they really are successful." Cooper explains Valley works for a lot of students because parents and society have corrected them for everything they have done wrong, time and time again, and the kids give up and won't try. "We are not knocking the regular classes, but in high school some teachers are faced with class loads of 50 kids and you cannot know 50 kids personally. Every year the class loads raise. Valley also gets more students, but we are small and that is one of our benefits,' she noted. Because the smaller class loads are inviting, Mcllberg and Cooper lfeisa"ir-l- 1 PROBLEM SOLVING . . .
