Players the caliber of Marty Haws out' of Hillcrest high, Gary Trost from Granite ' and Keith Chapman of Murray can and do make such dreams come true. ... They are by no means the only players from this area to appear on the roster of a college basketball team, JC or otherwise, ' by they are a very representative trio. Each has made good enough in the college ranks so far to more than justify the scholarship given him. They also have their own observations about the college game based on the role they've been asked to play in it. freshman For Gary Trost, a forward at BYU, that meant going from a situation of almost always being the biggest man on the court to just one of the biggest, a tall tree in a forest of tall trees. "The players are much bigger in college, bigger and stronger," he reported. "Everybody's the same height now and that has forced me to change my shot selection from when I was Granite." There's also a lot more pushing and shoving going on inside, according to Trost, something confirmed by Keith Chapman, a 7 sophomore forward at the University of Utah. "The game is a lot more physical," Chapman said. "The players are also quicker and faster." In talking about quickness and speed, few players have come out of the local high school ranks locally with a better reputation for both than Marty Haws, a sophomore guard for Brigham thi Paitw Stdt 4 I Lot AUTOIUITIC ft MANUJU. Trost, last year's Green Sheet MVP as a senior, also made the Green Sheet Honor Squad as a junior, while playing under Charlie Whiting. According to his present coach, Ladell Anderson, Trost is a good shooter with range for his size. Trost has seen action with the Cougars against Chicago State, Weber and Utah State. He admits to being a little jittery at times. learning .. another system, different in some ways, but similar in others, especially on "I good," defense." Marty Haws actually felt his time away on a mission helped his basketball career. "I got a chance to learn the system during my freshman year, before leaving on my mission," he explained. "Now I've come back as a sophomore, stronger and more mature.". Gary Trost is hoping to follow in Haws' footsteps as he plans a mission at the end of his ; freshman year. All three players had to make some adjustments in moving into college ball. Chapman's adjustment was complicated by the fact that he played a year at Weber State College then left on an LDS mission. When he got back he had a few options open and, after talking with the people at Utah, decided to transfer over. That meant learning two different systems with a mission in between.
