So on Dec. 20, 1934, they married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and the next spring went to Idaho where Herb "tried his hand" at farming. By the fall of 1935 they were in Tonapah, Nev. taking care of some houses and working in the mines. While trying to light a stove, Clara caught her dress on fire and was taken to the hospital. She gave birth to their first child while she was recovering from her burns. About this time, Herbert started selling Aluminum Waterless Millions Have Emphysema Emphysema is a word that is unfortunately becoming as commonplace as cancer in its occurence. Emphysema is the most common chronic lung condition. Millions of Americans suffer from it, and millions more suffer from some form of chronic obstructive lung disease such as chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is believed to be a result of chronic bronchial irritation or infection. It is estimated that more than 90 percent of persons with heavily, which emphysema smoke causes bronchial ' irritation. If you smoke, your chances are six times greater of getting emphysema than if you didn't smoke. It does occur in people who don't smoke, possibly due to irritants from air pollution or' d hazards or hereditary predisposition. The incidence of emphysema is increasing in women because of the habitual cigarette smoking, but is most often seen in middle-age- d or elderly white males, in cold, damp climates. It is seen eight to 10 times more frequently in men than women. Emphysema is a disease which affects the tiny air sacs called alveoli in the lungs. This is where the oxygen is transmitted to the blood and carbon dioxide is exchanged. Continued exposure to cigarette smoke and pollutants causes inflammation of the alveoli with release of enzymes by white blood cells which cause breakdown of alveolar walls resulting in larger air spaces within the lungs. Even though the air sacs become larger, there are fewer of them providing less surface area from which oxygen can be absorbed. This results in the person having to breathe more often because of oxygen shortage. Normally, we use about five percent of our energy to breathe, but a person with severe emphysema uses about 80 percent of total energy just to breathe. Exhausting work. The person with emphysema not only has problems with inspiration, trying to get air in, but more importantly expiration, or getting air out. Walls of bronchi become weakened due to the destructive work-relate- cookware on the party plan and since it involved much moving around they went to Salmon, Idaho in the winter of 1939. They built a trailer, and because the snow was so deep they just packed it up around the trailer for insulation. From here they returned to the Salt Lake valley in 1941. When Ihe news came that Pearl Harbor had been attacked, Herb put his skills to work building for the small arms plants and others in the area.-Hdidn't "go to war" because by then they had four little boys in their home. Herb was giving lots of rides to workers in Clearfield Naval supply depot but the highway patrol told him he had to have a permit to sell rides, so he went and got a PSCU permit and started the Parry bus. At one time they had two busses going. He worked at the Utah Portland Cement Co. in Salt Lake for over 20 years before retiring in 1977. He is also an inventive welder and machinist, having built many useful and unique things, such as swing sets, slides, golf carts, snowmobile trailers, and some carnival rides. Much of the equipment is still used at the State Fair, Murray Park and in the Murray Parade. Both Herb and Clara are active in the LDS church, currently serving as Branch and Relief Society presidents in the dependent branch of the Dominguez Park. This branch serves about 100 elderly, handicapped and low income people. They also work at the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they have served two LDS missions, to North Carolina and Tennessee. Herb sings with the Swanee singers, has sung many solos and plays several musical instruments. Clara enjoys sewing, quilting and handwork. Before they left on their first mission she had made over 60 quilts, one for each of the family for 1 Christmas. are the parents of nine They children: Bert, Brigham City; Walter, West Jordan; Zeno, Murray; Linda (Mrs. Paul) Huff, Groveland, Idaho; Alice (Mrs. Robert) Neff, Midvale; Diann (Mrs. Clifford) Litster, Roosevelt; Gail (Mrs. Carl) Shaw, Kearns; Keith, Gillette, Wyo., and Karl, West Valley, Deceased.
