Show 3 Thursday, December THE GREEN SHEET 20, 1984 Sportts Alta Grad Is Key Cog In BYU Air Force Attack P. r&i& I SALT LAKE. While BYU quarter- backs frequently get star billing great deal to do with the team's incredible string of success. This year two players who have been favorite targets for Robbie Bosco are athletes who were once given the heave-h- o by the university. Rather than take their considerable talents elsewhere, both tight end David Mills and wide receiver Glen Kozlowski overcame their problems, returned to the Y and are key reasons BYU is taking a number one ranking into tomorrow's Holiday Bowl contest. Mills, a former Alta high star, has been a particularly pleasant surprise for Coach LaVell Edwards this season. Playing in the shadow of Clay (Hail Mary Catch) Brown and two-tim-e Gordon Hudson, Mills became discouraged and let his academic endeavors slip. Forced to sit out a year, he in his own words, did some growing up, thanks in part to his wife the former Wendy McNichols. Wendy alerted Cougar coaches to the fact that Mills was considering a move and he was talked out of it. Still, going into the season, tight end was one of the question marks. Cougar coaches knew that the highly touted freshman Trevor Molini wasn't going to be ready to step into Hudson's shoes. But Mills was. He had worked hard. A senior, he knew it was his last chance. He put an additional 15 pounds of muscle on his 4 frame and was armed with a determined attitude. It paid off with an honorable mention on the AP honors and team, an upcoming chance to be drafted by both professional leagues. Mills was the Western Athletic Confernce's leading receiver with 60 receptions for 1,023 yards. The most memorable might have been one he seemed to have stolen from Kozlowski to score the winning locally and nationally, Cougar receivers over the years have had a Mac Yates Body and Paint Mac Yates I I I I I & Gene Price have joined together to give you GOOD SERVICE Specializing in Uni Bodies 0 1 Discount For Cash Customers With This Ad One Per Customer. Maybe his most memorable may come tomorrow in San Diego, although Cougar faithful are hoping the contest (7 p.m., cable channel 10 or UHF channel 20) won't come down to a a single unforgettable moment ala Brown's catch against STATIONS PLUS CHANNELS SPORTS said. With having a highly-toutepass defense, it was likely another good move by the man who has been ; named the nation's coach of the $ year. In addition to Mills, three other Green Sheet area athletes have seen considerable action - all on the highly acclaimed BYU defense which will be counted on heavily to help preserve the nation's longest winning streak tomorrow.
