SiJGi mohw FM-hom- Culbertson, owner- manager of KONI, based at Spanish Fork, in a talk before the Utah Lake Lions Club Thursday night. Mr. Culbertson used film and sound projections to present his talk wrhich was themed, "Who's and to Whom?" Listening KONI, he said, was the first Utah County radio station to institute FM. He described the intricate operation of establishing transmitting apparatus on ONE OF THE OLDEST continuously occupied dwellings in the state, this house at 677 W. 2nd S., was built in 1854 of adobe and rough-hew- n logs. Since that time it has been stuccoed, but it Still retains the flavor of the original dwelling built by Bishop James W. Love- - Provo Home May Be Longest Used in State By OWEN ZURO For more than 100 years, passer- s-by along West Second South in Provo Lave gone by a small, stuccoed building at 677 West, which may be the oldest continuously occupied residence in the state. In September of 1852, upon his arrival in Prova after crossing the plains, James W. Loveless adobe constructed a house on the northwest corner of Ninth West and Sixth South. This first home built by Mr. Loveless was torn down about one-roo- 1910. Family Moves James W. Loveless, who later became bishop of the Provo Second Ward in the LDS Church, lived in the home at Ninth West and Sixth South until the fall of 18M when, because of the all settlers Indian troubles, were asked to move inside the mud wall then under construction around the city. During the spring and sum mer of 1854, Bishop Loveless v built the house which the still see at 677 W. 2nd S. In tin fall of that year. Bishop Loveless moved with his family. joists consisting of hewn logs to support the floor and to hold up the reiling give some indication both of the age of the building and the construction meth-- j ods used in the building. Originally the house was constructed of adobe, but was later stuccoed as were many of the original adobe dwellings in the state. Records in the County Recorder's Office show that David M. Davis became the owner of the house and premises on Februpass-ers-b- ary 2, 1872. Boxer Lived There to many of the long-tim- ? residents in the neighborhood, one of the occupants of the house since its construction was Jack Dempsey, former iieavyweight boxing champion, as a boy, and his family before they moved to Salt Lake City. The present owner of the property is Lela Zomora, who acquirea title in 1958. Accord;ng A small dwelling, the house soon was much too small for the rapidly growing Loveless family. In 1861, Bishop Love less bought from one William Cameron a house and two city lots located at the intersection of Fifth' South and Fifth West, and he moved his family into a new and larger dwelling there in the fall of that year. The present two - story residence there cn the corner of Fifth South and Fifth West streets was constructed by Bishop Loveless in 1878, who had become one of the best and most prosperous farmers in Utah movie hi Bishop of the Second Ward from 1871 until 1889 when he died. Janus Loveless also held many other jobs of importance, including being a captain in the Nauvoo Legion. From the original diary of Elias H. Blackburn, first bishop of Provo. the account states, "I went immediately to Captain J. W. Loveless and called upon him to furnish his company to go with President Young home. I returned and had a good time with tha president and at 5 p.m. he blessed me and he and they took up their carriages, and md re horses and horsemen turned to Salt Lake City." In this turbulent time when Johnston's Army had just entered the state, Bishop Blackburn felt that President Brigham Young needed accompaniment back to Salt Lake City, and he called on Bishop Loveless.
