Many years ago I did just that. Had I looked more closely at my husband's family, had I not romanticized him as a daring young man, I would never have married a man so gross. A marriage of 26 years could not change this f vulgar, uneducated person when put to a real test. My husband lied, cheated, confused every issue, called black white even when proof was positive, I lost first my respect, tnen my shaky love for him. With this type it is impossible to talk things over. He always ended by stalking out, with this parting shot, "You are crazy. See a head doc tor. Drop dead." Finally, on the verge of a breakdown, I pui aside my religion and left him. In four months I was not only healed but free. Not long after that he came pleading and promising, putting on the old charm. To me he was a stranger. I saw his small business fall apart from lack of care and order. Our friends were no longer his but mine; and he is now where he: was when I met - . No. has crochet directions; trace off pattern for felt feet and hands. A fair inheritance meets my needs; I asked tor and receive nothing from my husband. I am now 50, and have much to live for. Grateful DEAR GRATEFUL: Many a girl thinks her parents are being just plain ornery when they oppose the mate she selected. Usually they object for good reason, based on the wisdom of their experience. Dazzled daughter sees only the superficial points of at- rtraction in her suitor; parents look deeper for the sound qual- ities of character on which all happy, marriage must be based. Parents can be wrong, of course, and sometimes daughter's choice turns out better than expected. More often their worst predictions come true. This happened to you and you are honest enough to admit your bad judg- ment. But there is one point in your letter with which I strongly disagree. I detect a kind of snobbery in your reference to the fact that your husband was "uneducated" and "from the swrong side of the tracks." Although the most successful marriages are between people of similar background, a man's education and his position on the right side of the tracks by no -- TO CROCHET J Jgfc -N J ' ' y Vv - !
