Show .t Business Personality of the Week HFR Al SUNDAY .. J. W. Christensen Weaves Success Story In Career in the Drug Business business,. J. W. Christensen has seen many new developments. Mr. Christensen, owner of City Drug Company, began at Moroni in 1916 when the pharamcist rolled pills, made tablets and tinctures, elixirs and syrups in his own apothecary shop. At this time the large pharmaceutical houses were just; beginning to produce these medications, setting up research departments and sending .out field men to promote use of their products. rrescrxpuon prices, wnich bad been- based on the labor of the pharmacist, began to be based upon the cost of the prepared drug from the pharmaceutical "I realize that through research and detail work we are getting improved drugs and better .medication," he said. "But, "as pharmacist of the old school, I have been particularly concerned over the high prices we are forced to charge presently for prescriptions. I Just marvel how young men with small families just'getting started fn life are able to pay for medication . There isn't much, however, he pointed . out, that the pharmacy as a pharmacist' of the old bases Its selling price on cost, and without a reasonable markup, it is soon ready to quit. "In tecent days," he added, "the alone can do about this cost: It ' ' manufacturer. packing up and pulling out simPicture Today ply because .volume and profits This trend has 'grown until few were not sufficient to cover presprescriptions today are actually ent day overhead and taxes." compounded by the pharmacist Maintaining competition, he himself, Mr. Christensen said. recommended, is the public's surest way of keeping medication prices at k minimum.
