Girls soccer The Park City girls soccer team defeated Ogden (10-5-1 overall, 8-1 in Region 11) 2-0 on Wednesday in the last match of the regular season. The Miners (12-4, 11-1) are tied with the Bonneville Lakers, who they split matches with this season. The Miners will now play in the first round of the state playoffs on Oct. 10 in Park City, though the Utah High School Activities Association had not yet listed who the opponent will be as of Friday. The North Summit girls soccer team lost to St. Joseph, 7-0, on Tuesday. The team has not won a game this season. Final scores for the match between North Summit and Waterford on Thursday had not yet been submitted to the UHSAA. It was North Summit’s final match of the season. Volleyball The Park City Miners volleyball team is still dominating Region 11. On Thursday the Miners dispatched Juan Diego in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-23. Senior Grace Wiczek led the team in kills with 17; senior Emily Smith led the team in aces, digs and assists with three, 13 and 37 respectively. Senior Dalton Daily led the Miners in serve receiving with 23, while senior Sarah Pillman had four blocks. The Miners (14-5 overall, 9-0 in Region 11) will play Bonneville (8-11, 5-4) on Tuesday at Park City High School at 6 p.m. The North Summit Braves (11-6 overall, 7-0 in 2A North) defeated Duchesne (7-8, 5-3) on Tuesday in straight sets: 25-23, 25-21, 25-22. Duchesne is North Summit’s closest region competitor. North Summit’s senior Brecklyn Murdock and junior Teesha Richins led the Braves in kills with 10 apiece. Seniors Hannah Lamon, Gracie Peterson and Richins led the team in aces with two apiece. Murdock had the most blocks with three; junior Kennady McQueen led in digs with 14; Lamon led in ball handling with 31 assists and McQueen led in serves received with 19. The Braves will play St. Joseph (11-13, 4-3) at home on Monday at 6 p.m. Continued from B-1 Running through the desert day, and she spent each night waking, blowing up her pad and trying to fall back asleep. On day three, the leaders were pulled back two hours for a staggered start to accommodate race volunteers and organizers. Mariash was the only woman in the top 10 athletes that were pulled back. By 11 a.m. she passed the woman in third, meaning she had a two-hour lead over her. After running up coral-pink sand dunes and over rocky, technical terrain, Mariash reached the third camp, and discovered that, even after her staggered start, she had arrived just 15 minutes behind the second-place woman, giving her a lead of 1 hour and 45 minutes. “After that I was like ‘I guess I can chill out,’” she said. Her lead, however, kept expanding. She started the last day in seventh place overall with a lead of 3 hours, 10 minutes over the next woman. “But you always get scared until the end,” she said. “Even on the 7.5-mile (final) day I was so scared I was walking down every step on the downhill, and technical sections. I was like ‘Don’t sprain your ankle again right now, or you’re going to be (evacuated by helicopter) out, and you won’t be the female champion. So I ran the whole race very cautiously versus the usual ragey runner on technical terrain.” Mariash finished in seventh Continued from B-2 Miners golf takes state title a fitting way for the senior to end his time with the Miners. “He went out the right way,” Murphy concluded of the four- Continued from B-1 Sports briefs PRE- AND POSTPARTUM YOGA The PC MARC offers a pre- and postpartum yoga workshop designed for new and expecting moms. Campers will enjoy games, sports, arts and COURTESY OF THE GRAND TO GRAND ULTRA Jax Mariash runs through a slot canyon during the Grand to Grand Ultra. The race traveled 171 miles from Arizona to Utah. overall with a time of 39:10.41, and described the win as “icing on the cake” after her tough season. She lost eight pounds over the course of the race, as did her backpack (as Mariash ate the food stored in it). “It was my No. 1 goal, and I’m honestly in shock,” she said. “I can’t believe it happened and I’m more excited about this than I have been in years. Top 10 with the men in a very tough field, then first American is really special for me — crushing all the U.S.A. boys.” The nationality aspect was particularly significant to Mariash because she wants to raise awareness for ultrarunning in the U.S., particularly stage rac- es, and said she hoped her result would inspire more people to get out and challenge themselves. “The whole way through these races, you have your country loud and clear on your bib and your sleeve, so you’re pushing it for your country, and to own that category of running for the U.S. is a big deal for me,” she said. Mariash already has plans for crossing off the last two continents on her list, starting this February when she plans to run the 140-mile Ice Ultra in Sweden, checking off Europe, then the 320-mile Track ultramarathon leaving out of Alice Springs, Australia, in May. year veteran. It was Tsandes’ first time shooting under par all season. In the end, the Miners bested Desert Hills by 12 strokes. The Desert Hills Thunder had closed the gap on Sky View, which finished third at 14 strokes behind the leader. Murphy said he considers each year’s state competition as the team’s first, though the messages from former players that flooded his phone after Tuesday’s win remind him of the team’s past successes. “It’s fun to get messages from all my players that say ‘Good job; so awesome to hear; just keep it rolling,’” Murphy said. “It’s fun to hear from those guys who started the tradition.” Murphy said Desert Hills has made continuing that tradition difficult in recent years. “But as the new (Miners) crop rolls in, we are trying to get them to raise their game,” he said.
