Show SUNDAY HERALD The Sports Scene Coaches Saving Lives With Driving Classes Provo Displays Power, 18-- 6 Highland Tops By WENDELL RIGBY Herald Sports Writer Some Hiirh School coaches 'in Utah County seem to have solved the problem of how to save the lives of enough students to provide themselves with material for athletic teams in the years to come. It is simply a method of teaching driver training classes in the schools in which they work, and it seems to be an effective system of "killing two birds with one stone." By RAY SCHWARTZ Herald Sports Editor Provo High's Bulldogs used a devastating ground and air attack Highland Friday night to defeat 18-in their of Salt Lake, High home opener in the BYU Stadium. 6, Quarterback Schaerrer Doug fired two touchdown passes and Sprin.fr-villcoach at basketball veteran directed the Big Green in a Alma Garrett, Devil Red to the creditable fashion to spark the and Joe Martinez, a newcomer to victory. The work at Orem is being cared for by Don Mower, former all star football and basketball player at American Fork. He is also helping with the sophomore football program at O.H.S. His program right now is with the tenth grade group, and enthusiasm is running high. The students are released from a regular academic class at intervals for a free drive with this personable young teacher, and wind up behind the wheel of the training car with some valuable supervised driving as their reward. Udell Westover, football coach at Orem, .gave the students something to think about, at least, in one of his classes recently. He said that drivers should be divided into three classes, each with separate roads on which to drive. According to his philosophy, the men should have one road, the old people another, women drivers should have a separate road (located on the west side of Utah Lake). Some of the girls, entering into the spirit of the occasion, said, "If the women drivers were all put together in one area like that they would kill each other off." His answer was, "No, they wouldn't do that because all women think alike anyway." Maybe he has something, at that. on an play with 81-ya- rd pass-and-r- Schaerrer tossing to d Bruce Dahle, and the the for Bulldog wingman cutting and the Highsidelines land secondary in a mad dash to the goal line. Quarterback J. Kari Worthing, looked especially good, and Doug Huff, halfback, was almost impossible to stop, and romped over the goal line for one of the eight Payson touchdowns. The Payson ball carriers looked good all around. Dixon called a fine game, and the running of Keith Buys, Rex Bryan and Lynn Stewart brought cheers from their near frozen fans. American Fork and Pleasant Grove seem to have "plenty on the ball" in this area; and Union, playing in Region Seven this year, was strong enough to bump Springville in last week's opener.
