Show Wednesday, November 3, 2004 HERALD DAILY The art of taxidermy; preserving memories Dallas John a look inside any home what do you see covered with decorations, ornaments, pictures and floral arrangements. While it is normal and very much accepted to see a family's favorite portrait or sentimental keepsake hanging proudly for all to see, that may not be the case when it comes to dad wanting to display last year's kill on the wall The recreation or "art of taxidermy" is what I want to talk about in this week's col- Take mal, but more because they On Hunting 4 umn. What is taxidermy? The word "taxidermy" is derived from ngIt is very hard for me to remain neutral on this subject, as I am both a hunter and a taxidermist. Like so many other people, I enjoy staying busy and seek satisfaction through hobbies and my abilities as a craftsman. While I am not into the floral est barf bucket. For the majority of these same craft professionals, who find pi as ore in their creative wajl wtcu , the thought of a dead deer, elk or pheasant staring back at an unsuspecting visitor might be a bit frightening and to be quite frank, almost unacceptable. Why do some people find an animal mount disgusting and or distasteful? The fact is that many people do not condone the killing of animals, let alone the display of such an act. Some may find the art of taxidermy unacceptable, not necessarily because they don't agree with the killing or hunting of an ani two Greek words taxis, which means movement; and derma, which means skin. In an effort to translate, this simply converts to the "movement of skin." Therefore, in an effort to recreate, a taxidermist must first remove the natural skin for his specimen, before replacing this skin over an artificial body and then must adjust the skin until once again it appears life- self-ma- like. Although the art of taxidermy has been around since the early 1800s, the thought of such a process sends many of today's individuals looking for the near- - form This inefforts cluded to develop mannequins (man-mad- e '' arrangements, Christmas wreaths and various other wall dwallies, my love for hunting did take me into the world of taxidermy and what I consider to be my own form of wall crafting and art. I say "art" because, despite those who do not enjoy or view taxidermy as an art form, there is in fact a true skill involved in becoming a good taxidermist. Today's taxidermy has developed into a form of wildlife art. Taxidermists should be considered as fine artists in their own species: Desert bighorn ram, its modern-da- y right, having incorporated many crafts, such as carpentry, woodworking, molding, tanning, sculpture, painting and drawing, into their craft. Although it wasn't until the 1800s that hunters began taking their trophy animals to taxidermists, the need for quality leather and skins found its place during the early 1700s. It wasn't long before every small town had a prosperous tannery business. These same tannery businesses (also upholstery shops) would later cater to the hunter and his needs to recreate and preserve past memories of those hunts he had participated. This initial practice found upholstery through a very shop owners crude process sewing up the animal skins after stuffing them with rags and cotton. Obviously, this crude form of taxidermy re--' suited in some terrible looking mounts and gave taxidermy a bad reputation which still haunts the industry to this day. Hence the term "stuffed animal." During the early 20th century, and with the help of artists . such as Coloman Jonas, Leon Pray, Carl E. Akeley and William T. Horneday, the art of taxidermy began to evolve into view the mount as real and alive. This, for some individuals, equates to fewer nightly trips to the fridge, an occasional "stare-down- " and numerous changes in your bathroom habits. After all, no one wants to be caught with their pants down if someone or somthing is watchi- Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep ram, buck deer, buck prong-horn, bull elk, bull moose, hunter's choice bison, hunter's choice Rocky Mountain goat, black bear, cougar, sandhill animal forms) which incorporated specific muscle and tendon detail to each and every animaL crane and wild turkey. The 2005 Sportsman Permit hunt runs Sept. 1 - Dec. 31, 2005. Hunters may hunt on any unit open for the respective species, except Antelope Island for bison; the Pilot Mountain unit for elk; and the Pine Valley, Virgin River unit for desert bighorn sheep. Very few animal parts are actually used in today 's taxidermy process. In recreating a deer andor elk, for example, the only natural parts being used are the animal's skin and its antlers. Today the efforts of such great artists continue to improve the world of taxidermy through the wide range of artistically pleasing poses and the sharing of their techniques for mounting such animals. Evide-nenc- e of such work can be found in those works of taxidermy displayed in museums, educational institutions and businesses around the world. " I Pheasant 2005 Sportsman permits: Applications for some of next year's most prized Utah hunting permits 2005 Sportsman permits will be available beginning today. Only Utah residents may apply for Sportsman permits. One Sportsman permit is offered for each of the following 1 . numbers: The num- ber of pheasants in northern and central Utah might be up slightly when Utah's 2004 pheasant season opens Saturday, but slow hunting is still expected in most areas. The number of Gambel's quail in southwestern Utah are at ' near record levels, however, and hunters pursuing this little bird could find good success. Utah's 2004 quail season also opens Saturday.
