"He's of humanity. He's universal. I know he's very British, very English, but you find a bit of Dickens everywhere." In fact, the next place Dickens pops proup is on PBS, in a new, two-paduction of "David Copperfield," airing April 16 and 17 (9 p.m. Eastern, both nights) on "Masterpiece Theatre." Directed by Simon Curtis, who helmed the very popular "Masterpiece" presentation of "The Prince of Hearts," starring Robson Green ("Mystery!: Touching Evil"), the drama stars Hoskins - seen just last week as Sancho Panza in TNT's "Don Quixote" - as Mr. Micawber. Playing Copperfield as a boy is Londoner Daniel Radcliffe, in his acting debut; and taking over the role as the older David is Northern Ireland native Ciaran McMenamin. Rounding out the cast are Emilia Fox ("Masterpiece Theatre: Shooting the Past") as David's mother; Pauline Quirke ("Mystery!: The Sculptress") as his doting nanny, Peggotty; Trevor Eve as his terrifying stepfather, Murdstone; and Nicholas Lyndhurst ("To Serve Them All My Days") as the ingratiating villain Uriah Heep. In addition, Harry Lloyd a descendant of Dickens - plays Steerforth, who befriends David as a boy; Oliver Milburn takes over the role as an adult. "My quick view is that he was the first television writer," says Rebecca Eaton, the executive producer of "Masterpiece" for Boston PBS station WGBH. "Basically he wrote these stories serially for magazines, curand that makes for second-ac- t tains; it makes for chapters; it makes for great serial television. charAnd he created acters. "In most of the books, there is also a drumbeat of dramatic tension, often about a small child and what will be the fate of this small child. There is also this gigantic dramatic struggle larger-than-lif- e between good and evil, and right and wrong. "For a Victorian, I think Dickens saw the world that way and had something to say. So you get all that, and great costumes and locations. For us, it's heaven on earth." "With Dickens, the stories are so good," says McMenamin, "the characters so strong. That speaks for itself, why people keep telling them. (It's not) why we keep telling them, but why people keep wanting to hear them. "To have produced another adaptation of 'David Copperfield' at the turn of the millennium, which everyone that has watched has enjoyed, is a testament to the man's writing itself. It's as simple as that." Doing this part is not McMenamin's first introduction to Dickens. He grew up with the author, in his small hometown of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. "I read it when I was 15," he says, "and 'Great Expectations.' We had the whole collection. I remember, there were all leather. the Dickens, in I just used to call them the green books. Then there were red leather books that were mixed classics, like i green-boun- d 'Robinson Crusoe.' "My mom had them in the house. They were there. They were always part of the house, and we grew up reading it. When it came time to audition for the part, I went to Virgin Megastore (in London) and bought myself a copy of the 1935 MGM movie, just the night before. "The purpose was to just put the story back in my head, so I wasn't doing too much lying at my audition." What many people remember about the 1935 Hollywood version, directed by George Cukor, is the performance of W.C. Fields as the endlessly optimistic but perpetually poverty-strickeMicawber. "I saw W.C. Fields about 20 years ago," says Hoskins, "and I made it a point not to go anywhere near the movie. So, if W.C. Fields does come through in my performance, it's not intentional." One thing Hoskins likes about the new version is its fresh treatment of the character of the Mrs. Micawber, played by Imelda Staunton ("Shakespeare in Love"). "When I read ('David Copperfield"), I was struck by Mrs. Micawber's heroism. They always portray her as an n . g hysteric, but she's not at all. She says, 'IH never leave you," and she never does. He gets into scrape after scrape, and she always stays with him. "I said to the. actress, 'Let's approach it like this, and she says, 'Yeah, I can see that.' That's the way we . approached it." For young Radcliffe, who says he identifies with the character of Bart Simpson ("I'm naughty," he says), the hardest part of all of David's travails had nothing to do with Dickens. "I wouldn't say acting was real easy," he says. "Well, it was lots of good fun. It was difficult sometimes, but the most difficult scenes actually are the ones with no lines in them, because sometimes you have to be still, which I'm not very good at." But there were distractions on the set. "Daniel's amazing," says Hoskins. "He spent most of his time on the set with me teaching him dirty ditties. He loved the dirty songs, and I know quite a few of them." Was Hoskins corrupting the boy? "I think he corrupted me, because he taught me quite a few as well! V |
