Show Page AI2 - THE DAILY HERALD, Provo, Utah, Saturday, April 15, 2000 (www.HarkTheHerald.com), Books touch on marriage, life J stories, history Many of you will know Cokie Roberts from her political reporting on National Public Radio or from her book, "We Are Our Mothers' Daughters." "From This Day Forward," her most recent book, written with her husband. Steven, is an interesting melange on the subject of marriage. Cokie, a Catholic, and Steve, a Jew, discourse with humor and grace about the perils and beauties of interfaith unions and. in fact, about the institution of marriage in general. The Roberts are much in favor of the commitment, stability, and power of married life. (' Their descriptions of their own marriage are interwoven with narratives of exemplary marriages from American history, such as John and Abigail Adams epistolary romance, as well as the horrors and impossibilities of trying .to have and maintain a marriage under slavery. "From This Day Forward" is a heartening, enlightening, pleasantly readable book about what it means to be married and why marriage is an institution worth preserving and sanctifying. Judging by the popularity of such supermarket mags as "People" and "Entertainment Weekly." and by A&E's somewhat more distinguished biography programming, most, of Us are interested in what's going on in other people's lives. Celebrating The New Yorker magazine's 75th anniversary, David Remnick, present editor, has collected 25 of the best profiles from the magazines archives into a magnificent book, "Life Stories." Here we have great writers writing about interesting people, famous or not or. as Kirkus Review so aptly puts.it, "nosiness aspiring f . ' t h Laura Wadley to the condition of art." The New Yorker profiles are twice artful the artistry of the authors revealing the art (and sometimes the artifice) of individual lives. Many famous people are proErnest Hemingway, filed here Isadora Duncan, Marlon Brando but my favorite is George H. old chairHunter, the man of the board of trustees of the AME Zion Church of Staten Island as he is portrayed in Joseph Mitchell's incomparable prose (see also his "Up in the Old Hotel and Other Stories"). "Life Stories" is a book filled with delights trenchant, tender, bittersweet. You would da well not to miss it. Winner of the 1999 National ISook Award for nonfiction, John Dower's "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II" is a deeply scholarly, emi- - -nently readable description of postwar Japan. The book details American occuhow the pation transformed an imperial democ-- ; society into a insuffiwith perhaps racy cient regard for Japanese tradition and culpability. This volume, says Brinley, "explains in both gospel and medical terminology why marital intimacy plays such an important role in marriage, and if not monitored carefully, can lead to marital discord at any point in the life cycle."
