Likable, comedy about an aquarium cleaner (Rob himself finds who Schneider) taking over gigolo jobs In order to make money in a hurry. His client all have something one's fat, one's a wrong with them but the point Is that they giant, etc. wtiich all just need more Deuce provides by befriending them. Far less crudene&s and sexuality than you'd think, and far more heart and comedv. Schneider's character is likable, and his supporting cast members are talented and funny. R (rear male nudity, sexual dialogue, fairly abundant profanity, comic violence), 1 hr., 29 mln. DOGMA: 3 stars. Two fallen angels (Matt Damon, Ben Affleck) find a loophole that would get them back into heaven which would make God a liar, which would negate all human existence. A lapsed Catholic (Linda Florentine) is called upon by an angel (Alan Rickman) to stop them ravfews an by trie 0. SiloW for Dafy HeraJd unto otherwise notod. AM 17m good-nature- d OPENING TODAY CIDER HOUSE RULES: Based on the John Irving novel and starring Michael Came ab a kindly orphanage doctor who . performs safe (but illegal) abortions. He "trains orphan Homer (Tobey Maguire) to be a doctor, but Homer decides to head out on ins own. Unavilable for review. PG-1fprnfaif). brief nudity, seuarty) MAGNOLIA: 3 stars. FT. Anderson ("Boogie Nights") wrote and directed this sprawling, multi storied film that apparhours and ently tninks it needs-threabout 1 7 different side by side plots to establish one point: that forgiveness Is important, that "we may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.' and that sometimes, things just happen 'Iheie s the TV host (Philip Baker Hall) dying of cancer; the crass womanizer iToin Cruise) whose estranged father (Jason Nobards) is also dying; a former kuj genius (William H. Mdcy) who now has lots of love in his heart but nowhere to put it, a good cop (John C. Reilly) who earnestly desires love in his life; and so on and so on. Any one of these stones could have been developed to stand on its own to get the same points across. Instead, we see them all, and while the acting is outstanding on all fronts (especially from Cruise in the best performance of his career, as well as Hall and Robards), the stories - trustratingly never come together. A f''Ti like this makes you expect that somehow these people's lives will intersect each other in ironic and unusual ways. Instead, the only thing that ties the characters together is a bizarre and random act of nature that occuis 2 hours jnd 50 minutes into the dim (look up Exodus 8:2, which is refer-- ' enced non subtly no fewer than four limes in the film, for a hint). Why does . this happen? "Sometimes things just hapiien," the film tells us. What the film DOtSN'T. tell us is what this is all sup- posed to mean, beyond the obvious themes of forgiveness and regret, and why it needed a cast of thousands to expiess those ideas. Interesting characters and stones, as well as a couple .innovative scene (like one where all the characters sing the song on the soundtrack), do raise this movie above the average. R (abundant harsh profanity, abundant crass sexual dialogue, brlel nudity, wry brief sex scenes, mild vio5 mln. lence, drug use), 3 hr sweet-nature- DAV CONTINUING AMERICAN BEAUTY: 3 12 stars. .Jtevm Spacey is a spineless man endur-yna midlife crisis, suffering through a !hellish suburban life in this dark, corrv 3elling comedy. Fascinating characters ebound, and you can't take your eyes off 5he movie even though it attempts to create a feeling or mood more than It Series to express a theme or make a Jpoint. R (abundant profanity, abundant fiudify and sex, drug use, homosexual "overtones, one scene of graphic violence), 2 hrs., 1 mln. ANNA AND THE KING: 2 12 stars. p.ots of changes from the familiar musi-c"The King and I," including an unnecessary Indiana Jones-stylsubplot about (3b coup attempt Without that, the true tostory of Anna (Jodie Foster) and her on Siam and Its king (Chow in the 1860s is an interesting one, r4ith fine performances from both stars. CThe cinematography gives us a stunning Jiview of Siam, loo, giving us plenty of beauty to look at along with the engaging story. Not quite the grand, sweeping Kirama it wants to be, but a good try at 1 e Yun-JJa- p-ffe- 120 West Main American Fork CH1EHAS PG-1- Stone's obscenely realistic, look at professional football as a metaphor for life. Al Pacino Is a tough coach forced to use his quarterback (Jamie Foxx), who's not a "team player." Stone uses every filmmaking technique he knows, often filming without a tripod and cutting from one shot to another with lightning speed. Explosively entertaining and profane, this is the third-strin- g "Saving Private Ryan" of football movies. (abundant profanity, abundant locker room nudity Including frontal male nudity, brief sexual nudity, abundant football-relateviolence, brief drug use), 2 hr., 45 mln. THE BACHELOR: 2 stars. Bland, predictable romantic comedy in which a confirmed bachelor (a likable yet personality-fre- e Chris O'Oonnell) must get married within 24 hours or lose a $100 million inheritance. The fact that he has a girlfriend (Renee Zellweger) makes the end obvious from the beginning. She rebuffs him, he asks every girl he's ever known, and the ensuing pandemonium ranges from mildly entertaining to outlandishly dumb. There are good moments, though, thanks to supporting cast members like Peter Ustinov and Hal Holbrook. PG-1- 3 (moderate profanity, moderate sexual Innuendo), 1 hr., 40 mln. BICENTENNIAL MAN: 2 stars. What R . Is meant to be a sweeping epic instead comes across as weak and only occa- sionally involving. Robin Williams plays Andrew, a household robot who develops the feelings and emotions of a human yet remains immortal, having to see everyone he loves die off. It's billed as a family comedy, yet is too long and ultimately too dramatic to work as one. Williams's brand of comedy only works when it's the frenetic and crazy kind, If it works at all. Here, he's too reigned In to register, PG (scattered profanities, some sexual dialogue (though somewhat discreet), minor vulgarity), 2 hrs., 12 mln. BLUE STREAK: 2 stars. For Martin Lawrence fans only, who will no doubt find his hyper-activ- e mugging and amusing. From an objective standpoint, the movie itself is a "buddy-cop- " film, and few of the gags are actually funny. Lawrence poses as a cop In order to retrieve a stolen diamond hidden in the depths of the police station; Luke Wilson Is his bland partner. PG-1-3 (abundant minor profanity, drug references, action-relate- d violence), 1 hr., 33 mln. BRINGING OUT THE DEAD: 3 stars. Visually stimulating but Intellectually mediocre film from Martin Scorsese, whom we normally expect a little more out of. Nicolas Cage Is an EMT plagued with guilt over letting a girl die, and he must learn to forgive himself, Lots of flash and substance the film Is undebut it meanders and niably Interesting doesn't add up to much. R (fairly abundant profanity, brief nonsexual partial blood and nudity, brief accident-relate' gore), 2 hrs. DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO: 2 d from going through with It, with two prophets and a forgotten 13th apostle (Chris Rock) to help her. The movie's blasphemy is not in Its ideas, which are and often thought-provokin(especially in terms of what organized i.e., the Catholic Church religion has become); the blasphemy is in the careless way the names of Deity are tossed around and the way Deity itself Is treated. From an artistic standpoint, it's a hilarious, intelligent satire of modern religion, though religious people may certainl- y take offense at the language used throughout it. R (abundant profanity, disrespectful language, crude humor, vulgarity, sexual references, one scene of nonsexual nudity), 2 hrs., 10 mln. DRIVE ME CRAZY: 2 12 stars. Generic teen movie In which two oppo-site(Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier) must pretend to like each other in order to make their ex'es jealous, but but this wind up actually falling In love one's less annoying, more sweet and even a little deeper than Its counterparts. A very likable, harmless film, if not s (mild proterribly original or clever. PG-1- 3 fanity, mild sexual Innuendo, teen age drinking), 1 hr., 40 mln. END OF DAYS: 1 12 stars. The trouble with a movie about Arnold Schwarzenegger vs. Satan Is that you don't know who to root for. The decision is even harder In this loud, distasteful train wreck of a film In which Arnold's p character Isn't moody, alcoholic even remotely likable. But he's the one who has to stop Satan (Gabriel Byrne) from Impregnating a young virgin (Robin Tunney) with a child who will bring about the "end of days." An explosion-filleoverly gruesome, darkly filmed, unllkable, unexciting, uninteresting movie. The interpretations of Bible prophecies are e by ANY religion's ludicrously standards and the plot Is full of convenient coincidences and stupid developments. R (abundant profanity, occasional nudity, sexual dialogue, a couple sex scenes, graphic beatings and other gruesome, bloody violence), 1 hr., SB mln. FIGHT CLUB: 4 stars. Hilarious and macabre, this dark, nihilistic film follows a white-colla- r nobody (Edward Norton) and a soap salesman (Brad Pitt) as they establish an underground club for men to fight each other, which leads to more mayhem. The film uses Innovative flashbacks, narrations and cinematography to examine the male psyche and what men have become. Undeniably primal and violent, yet highly Intelligent and engaging. R (abundant profanity, brief but explicit nudity, a brief sex scene and overheard sexual activity, and a whole lot of fighting, most that's right of ft very realistic, with abundant blood and bruises), 2 hrt., 20 mln. ' ' GALAXY QUEST: 2 12 start. Surprisingly funny actloncomody about a group of actors on a "Star Trek'-typshow who are still, 20 years later, trying to shake the stigma and escape the obsessive groupies. A group of real aliens asks the crew to come help them defeat their enemies, not realizing that "Galaxy Quest" was just a TV show. Tim Allen as the "commander" Is too over-thtop, but Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub and Alan Rickman are wonderfully understat- g space-monst- DNDOHNnWOM 7 & 9:00 P.M. Nightly IS ChJIdrM $3 CLOSED eye-rolli- warden Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) and his relationship with his prisoners particularly John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a hulking giant with the ability to heal others. The three hours of the film do not pass terribly, slowly: only the framing story with an older Paul teemt superfluous. Still, the film, while emotionally affecting, doesn't death-ro- reach the heights it aspires to, and Its about mortality, crime and . themes punishment, and lots of other stuff are never nailed down enough to make the whole thing very satisfying. Excellent acting all around, though, particularly from Hanks and Duncan, as well as from Doug Hutchison as a sadistic guard. R (brief sex (overheard, not seen), fairly heavy profanity, a grisly execution scene, vulgarity and crass sex talk), 3 hrt., 7 New' York MAN ON THE MOON: 3 stars. Jim Carrey, more committed than he has ever been, channels Andy Kaufman In this of the legendary comedian who made It his goal to keep the , audience guessing. This Is basically a reenactment of some of Kaufman's most famous moments, with the Bdded bonus of seeing what happened behind the scenes (a luxury Kaufman's audiences were never afforded). Unfortunately, we learn nothing about Kaufman, who he really was or why he acted the way he did. As an entertaining story about a crazy performer and the weird stuff he did, "Man on the Moon" Is fantastically funny and entertaining. As a biography, It offers no Insight whatsoever. R (fairly heavy profanity, vulgar language and one scene of female nudity), 1 nr., SS mln. POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE: star. Sometimes incomprehensible, sometimes moody, almost never fun, this cheaply animated trifle probably Isn't even entertaining for kids. An evil clone called Mewtwo seeks to destroy the whole world, and the good Pokemon come to the rescue, with lots of violence to help them out. (The movie then has the nerve to pass off "violence Isn't the answer" as Its message.) Preceded by a 12 ' e RANDOM HEARTS: 1 Star. Unbearably slow and ponderous yawner In which Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott .Thomas play strangers whose plane-- crash-victispouses were having an affair. The film tries to be about grief, but sheds no new light, and'there's positively no reason for Ford's and Thomas's characters to fall in love, Subplot Involving Ford's work as a cop goes nowhere, as does the entire film. No romance, no warm feelings, no laughs, no tears why would anyone see this? R (scattered profanity, one sex scene with partial nudity, flstflghts, a shooting), 2 hrt., 12 mln. RUNAWAY BRIDE: 3 Stars. THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY: 4 stars. Psychodramatic character study starring Matt Damon at Tom Ripley, a man wittt no paat and no personality. He becomes obsessed with Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), a rich Princeton grad who's In Itifjy squandering daddy's money, and at Tom suffers an Identity crisis, his obsession with Dickie leads to psychotic conclusions. Despite being based on a "Saturday Night Live" sketch, this film It not awful, in fact, the tale of constable tchabod Crane (Johnny Depp) must determine which mortal is controlling the Horseman and killing off townsfolk. The story becomet awfully confused, with the murderer's identity coming as a true surprise, tlnce It's a character we barely remember at even having been In the movie up to that point.
