He has also ventured into the wide realm of composition, and the latest efforts from his musical pen stand out for their usefulness and beauty. Mr. de Jong- was born in Holland and came to Salt Lake about ten years agro with his parents. Since coming; here he has officiated as organist of Pioneer of the Twenty-sixt- h stake, chorister ward, and- - conductor of the Mendelssohn orchestra. Among his teachers he numbers some of the best of this city, as well as Alberto Jonas, the celebrated Spanish , pianist. X A musical was given Wednesday evening at the home of Miss Hazel K. Olson in honor of Mies Effie Grahm, a moving- picture star. Piano selections were given by Miss Gertrude Almond, Miss Eunice McLaughlin,, and Mrs. Russell. There were vocal selections by Mrs. Black, late from a concert tour in the east, and by Miss Grahm. The. hostess was. assisted in dispensing hospitality to the guests by Misses Trma, Rose and Clara Middle-mls-- s and by Master Joseph Olson. When Dr. William .CCarl. the noted New York organist, was in Salt Lake two weeks ago, he spent three days here almost entirely incognito, his chief desire to rest. He listened Saturday organ recital at the. Tabernacle by Salt Lake's premier organist, concerning which 'he wrote Organist McClellan from Lake Tahoe. Cal., under date of , August 5, as follows: "The alterations and additions which you recently completed oh the organ in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, and which I visited last week, have absoand lutely transformed the instrument made it one of the world's master-organHaving been there a, year ago, I did not think the contemplated changes would make such a radical difference in the general effectiveness. Each department of the organ presents a surprise. The unusual voicing and perfect acoustics of the Tabernacle enables the performer to produce effect which are well nigh marvelous.
