But thanks to the talents of a team consisting of Hill AFB workers and contractors working for the Technology and Industrial Support Directorate, hearing-impaireworkers can now be trained using visual images from video and a message "spoken" in American Sign Language. ASL, as it is known, is a language used primarily by the deaf which combines hand signs, facial gestures and body movements to convey a message. Three chemical-safet- y video tapes have been translated into ASL specifically for hearing-impaireworkers both at Hill and across the Air Force. The translated tapes are similar to standard instructional videos. Workers are shown the proper way of handling materials and instruction is given as the images appear on the screen. However, in the ASL versions, verbal instructions have been replaced with an interpreter signing the message. The interpreter is placed on the screen as an inset, allowing the viewer to see both images. According to Barbara Crosby, the base's sign language interpreter, having the videos translated into ASL is much better than merely captioning the d 9lf WOO3 r by David W. He's in a hurry, so he decides to ignore his training and not put on his face guard and gloves. One slip of the hand later, the accident he thought could never happen landed him in a speeding ambulance. It's no secret that working with hazardous chemicals can be dangerous if the handler is not properly trained. "For most, ASL is their first language, just as English would be for hearing Americans. However, for the deaf, English is a second language and a little more difficult for many of them to understand." Ms. Crosby explained that ASL is not merely a sign version cf English, but a unique language with its own rules and structure. "The tapes have been received well," said Chris Johnson, who acted as the interpreter. "When you go out of your way to help the deaf, they really appreciate it. "I think the tapes will help them be better informed and instructed. Because the videos are done in ASL, the hearing-impaireare more involved, and as a result, more receptive," Mr. Johnson said. "The tapes are being cataloged and will soon be available to any organization on base," said Roger Tollerud, a senior research analyst contractor working in TI. "Eventually they will be made available to all the air logistics centers, and possibly the entire Air Force." Three titles were translated into ASL: "Transportation and Chemical Safety," "Your Right to Know" and "Chemical Safety and Storage."
