It is an exploration of the individuals and not just a retelling of Shakespeare's story." "Macbeth" is an ideal text and choice for theatre that Glenn Brown says, "confronts the raw states of human emotion." Glenn Brown says that Butoh is "a meditative form of dance. You have to go into yourself mentally and emotionally and basically lose touch with the outside." The production of "3utch Macbeth" is unique because Glenn Brown composed 22 pages of poetry to work with the choreographed dance. Director Linda L Brown says, "Most Butoh is done without text. Lynch's ability to take a quiet town with nice people and explode the evil that Kirks in and under them to the fullest horrifying extent makes me giggle with good and delight By evil, Lynch scared me into believing see MACBETH, that there is the potential for a page Rll "Killer Bob" in everyone. Essentially, Butoh dance, and the Lab Theatre's original production, "Butoh Macbeth," works on the same premise. Butoh began in War II Japan, a response to the traditional dance forms. Butoh means, "to dance in darkness" an explanation of the dark and often grotesque images presented. post-Worl- 1 fi - Butoh, en avant-gard- y style of dance, is paired with Macbeth e at the Lab d COUICTIGN (HE SIGNATURE Theatre. Musical Wizardry by Jeremy Asoy ' 'i 3"i'''- - long last, Bela Reck, wizard of our modem is returning to Salt Lake Flecktones. the with City Bela Reck has been Banjoist g his way to the top of n the musical since age 15. With bluegrass, country, jazz, rock, pop, classical and Celtic music under his belt, lately he has been expanding into the realm of experimental electronica and music which hasn't yet been given a name. Fleck, who is pretty well known, is most popular among the popu-.- ; lar. He has graced such bands as Phish, Dave Matthews, Blues Traveler, Alison Krauss and others with his presence and influence. The Flecktones has been Fleck's major project for more than ten years. He still produces solo albums every so often and is constantly working with others. The Flecktones' music is pretty much jazz. In my opinion, the music is way too innovative and diverse to fit under any genre name. But I say jazz because the Grammys gave the Flecktones' latest CD, Outbound, the Best Contemporary Jazz Album award. That makes four Grammys for Fleck, three of which are with the Recktones. The Flecktones began in 1989 when Fleck recruited brothers Victor Wooten and Futureman. Futureman plays his homemade Drumitar. The Drumitar is a drum machine shaped like a guitar, and is capable of doing anything a drum kit can do and a little more. Futureman's brother, Wooten, is probably the most innovative electric bassist the world has ever seen. He lias received two Bassist of the Year awards from Nashville Music and won three similar awards from Bass Player Magazine. Wooten has been playing since age 5, and his skills are unhuman. At a previous Salt Lake concert, I witnessed him move frcm his smooth funk bass line into a Parliament bass line, then on to classics "Greensleeves" and "Flight of the Bumblebee, " then back into his smooth funk, all while dancing and swinging his guitar around his neck on the strap, never missing a note, keeping the audience suspended in a state of awe throughout it all. The newest addition to the Recktones is saxophonist Jeff Coffin. He alternates between the alto and 1 fa tZ2 At genre-bendin- i food-chai- 3r be-bo- p, . Qadery Brida$ng for - ZCMI Center Mali .
