Vice President for Student Affairs Barbara Snyder said she wants to place "student help desks" at strategic places around campus. "We receive complaints from students who are sent the place for information," Snyder said. Snyder wants the help desks to provide students with general information about a variety of topics, such as the location of the testing center or the process required to withdraw from a class. She said possible locations could be the A. Ray Olpin University Union, the J. Willard Marriott Library and the Student Services Building. Vice President for Administrative Affairs Arnold Combe said he would work with Loretta Harper, vice president for human resources, in retraining key staff members. "Our staff needs to be familiar with what is going on on campus so they can direct visitors and students. A lot of this effort will center around training," he said. Combe hopes the initiative will help students stay on the path toward graduation. all-ov- "It is valuable. Students need to get the appropriate information at the appropriate time so they can progress in a timely manner," he said. By decreasing the time it takes students to graduate, the U would save money since it would no longer have to subsidize students who are normally taking the more expensive n courses. "The concept of customer service came into this as we were discussing it," Combe said. The administration is in the process of developing ways to improve the service provided to students in academic departments and in auxiliary services, such as the U Bookstore or the union. The initiative does not solely focus on improving awareness of student services and the way students are treated, said David Pershing, senior vice president for academic Applications can be pickcJ up at the Center for Etlmic Student Affairs, Olpin Student Union, Room 318 or call 801-581-81- 51 (Applicants nmsbe be ofAmerican Indian Descent) jlis. "We are trying to look for policies and rules that are really not necessary...things we can change to make processes simpler," he said. The process for a faculty member, department chair or dean to get anything approved takes "too many levels of signatures," Pershing said. He is working on ways to streamline the approval process. "We have to become more efficient," he said.
