"That's why it's taken me a year and a quarter to deal with it," Jackson said. "He says a lot of things to .you and if you don't deal with it right, it can crush you." That's what happened to Jackson last year. He was Oregon's prep superstar and was ready to teleport his stardom to the collegiate courts. Dick Vitale would be raving about Jackson when he saw him play. It never happened. Majerus doesn't believe in a run and gun offense. He believes defense, rebounding and passing or the keys to winning. This was more new to Jackson than hockey is to Jamaicans. At Woodrow Wilson High School, playing defense was an afterthought to scoring (22.8) and rebounding (8.4). This tedious brand of basketball was confusing Jackson, and Majerus wasn't about to hold his hand through it all. "I'm definitely that's who I am." hard on players; Jackson wasn't used to the criti f trated. "If coach believes in you, the sky's the limit But sometimes I didn't feel like coach believed in me, by some of the things he said," Jackson said "I didn't think coach had faith in me, and if you don't have faith in yourself, no one can help you." The Ute sophomore is gradually becoming acclimated to Majerus' harshness, and he's learning that the tougher Majerus is, the higher up the clouds are. Majerus yelled at Keith Van Horn more than any other player during his 27 years of coaching. It was nothing personal, he just didn't want Van Horn's talents to be wasted. That's what he's doing with Jackson. It's never been a question of offense for Jackson. During a game in Sweden this summer, Jackson scored 36 points. "Coach wasn't there, though he was a day late," Jackson said. "We ran the offense and did everything we normally would do, but without coach there, I felt more free and felt like I could play. "I'm starting to feel that way with coach there." That renewed confidence is a ' "'" ','"rrir-n""- of his defense. Jackson can In high guard anybody school, though, he developed a habit of napping when his opponents didn't have the ball Majerus quickly disreflection one-on-on- e. pelled those power naps. His defensive awareness is coming around, and Majerus is noticing. "He's defending much better and taking care of the ball," the coach said. "His offense is going to come. He's got quickness and he's got strength, but I'm more pleased with his defense." Jackson could be playing college basketball almost anywhere right now, and he probably would be averaging points per game. In his mind, though, he wouldn't be preparing himself for the ultimate the NBA. "I wanted to go somewhere where I knew Td develop into a good player," Jackson said. "Ifou've just got to wait your turn here." He patiendy watched Van Horn last year, and he's waiting through Michael Doleac this season. By the time he's a senior, the Runnin' Utes could be Jackson's team and then college basketball fans around the country will see why Jackson and Majerus think he can reach his dream. 0 """'" IIMT JIMMWi WW 15-2- 0 no wm Chronicle Photo Danny La Despite coach Majerus' criticism, Jackson doesn't regret coming to Utah. - Utah's Swim Teams Will Make Waves in Calif, at Speedo Cup by Erik Martinez Chronicle Sports Writer After a prolonged layoff, Utah's swim teams return to the water today as they take part in the Speedo Cup.
