There wasnt much acoustic in "The First Annual Acoustic Christmas Concert." The billing on this concert was quite odd; besides being light on acoustic, it made no mention of Christmas and you really can't call the first of anything annual. Overall, though, "The First... Concert" was really rather good. The concert, featuring Lisa Loeb, Blessid Union of Souls and Shawn Colvin, was held at the Huntsman Center Tuesday night and while it was definitely far from packed, there was not a lack of audience. The audience, in fact, was probably the loudest, most rambunctious part of the entire evening. The concert began with the Z Morning Zoo: Frankie, Marcy and "Danger Boy" from KZHT giving the usual greeting and announcing the first act, Lisa Loeb another oddiBlessid since of Souls was Union ty, supposed to open the show. Lisa Loeb came on stage in a - short, burgundy velvet dress and her trademark glasses which make her look like she comes from "Greater Tuna," Texas not surprising, since she is from the Lone Star state. All alone in the middle of the Huntsman stage, Loeb seemed like a little girl giving a recital. She sang all the songs in her set to CD perfection. Especially memorable were "Stay (I Missed You)," "I Do," and a requested "How," along with several songs from her latest CD Firecracker. Loeb whispers the words that spell out what lingers in the depths of all girls' hearts. Blessid Union of Souls was announced by the "Zoo" after a brief intermission. Their beautiful name, Blessid which brings up Union of Souls images of storybook romance was actually inspired by Frank Burns on a MASH rerun. These were some of the many secrets divulged in a short preconcert interview with BUS. BUS, consisting of Eliot Sloan, Jeff Fence, Eddie Hedges, Tony Clark, and CP. Roth has been together five years and had a few hits; with either siif or seven singles they disputed amongst themselves the exact number. Roth, the apparent spokesman for the band and the only member who had been to Utah before on tour with Ozzy Osboume had an excellent personality that seemed to shine through in one of the more memorable moments of BUS's performance: an intriguing harmonica solo. In all, BUS performed an upbeat set the "peppy" audience loved. It included, however, electric guitars, about as far keyboards, et al. from acoustic as you could get. While their performance was not ggffe- - i g& - Colvin Tuesday night and sounding. BUS acted like they were the headlining band instead of the opener, performing for over an hour the longest of any performer (hence the lack of acoustic). At the end of yet another intermission, the DJs from KZHT presented sizeable checks of $10,540 each to the YWCA's Battered Women's Shelter and the ITs Women's Resource Center, since the concert was for their benefit. Shawn Colvin came on stage looking nothing like the ads for the concert, with red hair and leather pants. She only performed five songs, including a duet of "Mona Lisa" with Lisa Loeb, and "Nothing On Me," which she told us will be the ' new theme song for "Suddenly Susan." She said she and Brooke Shields are making a video for the song and suggested they dp it in the nude. "Nothing on me, she said. Of course, she played her enormous hit "Sunny Came Home," the only song most of the youngsters in the audience had ever heard. The audience's restlessness after the very hyped BUS set distracted considerably from the performance, leaving one wishing Colvin were performing in a more intimate setting like the IAMA concert series in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Unfortunately, she didn't sing anything from her Fat City album, decidedly her most poetic effort to date. The five' songs she performed were from her first and most recent albums. The dynamics of Colvin's voice were entrancing and beautiful. The only thing lacking in Colvin's performance was the lack of performance. She was billed as the headlining artist, but performed the least. The KZHT DJs came back and asked if the audience wanted an encore, and with the obvious yes, Loeb and Colvin returned for a final duet, performing one of Loeb's older songs. It was disappointing to' have Colvin singing backup oh her own encore. , While there were a few problems Colvin's SALTMR Present your Student ID at any off the Soith'tm Outlet 1 f et $5,00 ticket price. If there is a Second Annual Acoustic Christmas Concert, perhaps their will be a little more acoustic and maybe a Merry Christmas or two. Robert A Jones contributed to this article. |
