Show THURSDAY, 4. DECEMBER 4997 VIEW MAGAZINE i - 3 This play does contain a lot of ' sexual references, which give it a college feel. Many of them go over your head if you don't pay attention. Most of them come from MacDonald's hilarious Juliet, played by U grad Theresa Ravnikar. She gives life to the play's silly take on the romantic heroine, getting the big laughs and holding the audience's attention in every movement. Her foil is a war-lik- e self through interaction with the Shakespearean characters Desdemona and Juliet. "My God, I think Tm on an acid trip," she exclaims in blank verse (count the syllables), which is the way she talks throughout her journey "through the wastebasket." The fact that she enters Othello by falling in her wastebasket gives the play a Lewis Carroll quality. Instead of growing and shrinking, she switches plays and, instead of a caterpillar, there is a riddling Desdemona, convincingly played by Anne Schilling. Schilling also plays Mercutio and a very funny servant boy. The two men, Joe Pitti and Alexis Baigue are also excellent. Pitti provides lots of laughs, both as Juliet's nurse and Othello. Baigue is equally funny as the sycophant Iago and the callow, squeaky-voice- d Romeo. The most hilarious parts of the play come in his arguments with Juliet. Groucho Marx. The many surprises on Connie's journey make Desdemona a lot like Alice in Wonderland. 5., . The language is distinctly Shakespeare, and one of this play's most charming qualities.. Playwright MacDonald has an amazfor ear ing style. Ann-Mar- ie Another charming quality is the play's clever use of puns. MacDonald imitates Shakespeare's pun expertise with a Groucho Marx character who riddles like the weird sisters in price. Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning, Juliet) plays Thursday-Sunda- y through Dec. 21 at SLAC. Shows begin at 8 PM with Sunday matinees at 2 PM. Tickets are $20-2-5 and can be purchased through ArtTix Macbeth. Picking up on Shakespeare's obsession with Juliet's virginity, MacDonald writes a "prayer to hymen, God of virginity" which is one of the more campy parts of tickets are also available for certain performances. e 5 u Half-pric-e (355-ART- the play.
