Trout fall feeding frenzies are common before they slow down and become lethargic. Although conditions may be nice, backcountry travelers are advised to prepare for sudden changes of weather and inform someone at home of your plans. Anglers are also encouraged to avoid spawning redds to preserve future fishing opportunities. Provided are a few highlights shared1 jy Division of Wildlife Resources employees: Fishing is Strawberry Reservoir fair to good according to several sources with shore fishing slowly picking up. Dark colored jigs seem to be the most productive bets, but float tubers are reporting good success with leech patterns and sinking line. Fish are moving to the shallow areas and algae is still pretty thick. Anglers are encouraged to reel fish in as quickly as possible, handle them gently, and clip (he line if a fish swallows the hook to effectively release the fish. The limit is four fish with only one trout over 18 inches. Provo River (above Olmstead Artificial flies and Diversion Dam) lures are only allowed on this stretch. Brown trout are beginning to spawn and anglers should avoid the wading through the gravel areas called redds. Light pressure on weekdays. Fishing expert, Doug Wixom, suggests trying mayflies on the surface, between p.m. Hares Ear, Pheasant tails, scuds and sow bugs also are working, in sizes 16 and smaller. Only 2 brown trout under 15 inches may be kept. All rainbows and cutthroats must be immediately released. Construction in the canyon is causing short delays and may limit parking in some areas. Grantsville and Settlement have low to moderate water levels, with fair fishing success using traditional baits. Big Sand Wash Reservoir Reports of fair to good fishing for Vz pound rainbow trout. Try power bait, salmon eggs and nightcrawlers from shore. Slow trolling various spinners, or with a worm, is effective for pop-gea- r trollers. Light pressure on weekends. Try standard nymphs and spinners. Also, sinking Rapalas are very popular for brown trout. Black plastic and maribou jigs are effective in deep holes. Below Water Hollow Creek, try drifting powerbait or nightcrawlers with the current, through riffles and pools, for rainbows. Calder Reservoir Reports of good fishing, light to moderate angler pressure. Access varies with the suspending powerbait, nightcrawlers and other standard trout baits above the moss with marshmal-low- s or bubbles. Fly fishermen are doing well catching rainbow trout from float tubes, using a sink tip line and streamers. Just kick and troll for best results. Spinners, spoons and dark jigs are also working well from boats and float tubes. Four fish limit in reservoir and tributaries. Flaming Gorge Reservoir Try Rainbow trout fishing is improving, with good reports from the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor's Center and Sheep Creek areas. Fish a nightcrawler five feet below a bobber, or make a slow pre- sentation using spinners and small lures. Kokanee salmon action is slow. The Wyoming portion of the reservoir is closed to the possession of kokanee, from Oct. 1 - Nov. 7. Lake trout fishing is spotty, but some good catches have been reported from Linwood Bay. Try jigging 34 to one ounce maribou or rubber-skirted jigs, tipped with a dead minnow or sucker meat. Harvesting lake trout will continue to improve the predator deer-vehic- prey balance with kokanee salmon. Green River (upper) The base is 2,900 cfs, with no fluctuation. November and December flows will probably average 3,400 cfs, depending on snowpack. Fishing the past week has been some of the best in recent months, with warm weather spurring flow caddis hatches and hopper action. Microbaetis hatches continue to provide good fishing with emergers in size and dry midge patterns in size Concentrate efforts in the slack water and eddies. Manti LaSal National Forest DWR regional aquatics manager indicates water temperatures are on mountain lakes and lowering streams, and that fishing success is Louts-Berg rising correspondingly. "It won't be long before high elevation lakes get snowed in," Berg said. "It's a good time to get out and go fishing." Blue Lake was stocked in August with fingerling grayling! The grayling, which are a new sportfish for the Manti, are expected to be at a catchable size in 1998. Lake Powell Wayne Gustaveson, DWR Lake Powell biologist, reports good bass fishing will continue as long as the weather holds the lake in the low 60s. Activity is expected to decrease as temperatures dip into the 50s. Gustaveson suggests broadcasting finely cut anchovies around the boat to encourage feeding behavior. With the present water temperature, surface activity is also worth investigating.
