The Pioneer eleven are now scheduled to meet the Bear River Bears this Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the 3A state football championships. Former Lehi coach, Jeff Kilts, is the Bears' first-yea- r mentor. Last Friday's game was played in freezing temperatures and the elements kept the score down. Lehi jumped off to an early lead when Trevor Varney sprinted 25 yards to pay dirt. Jake Hunt's kick was good for the margin. Drew Wilson intercepted the Ute quarterback's pass to start their next drive, but then the Lehi receiver caught a aerial and fumbled in the cold. Uintah recovered and that ended the Pioneers' second drive. In the second period, playing against the wind, Lehi ground out 60 yards, but time ran out before they could score again. Also in the second quarter, the Utes tried a field goal, but Andy Hadfield was so quick through the line that he tackled the holder before the kick could get away. Hadfield is the leading scorer for the Pioneer squad with 62 points in the season. He is trailed by Hunt and Braden Cooper, each with 48 points. Hunt has 36 of 37 PATs and four field goals. Otherwise, the Lehi Pioneers would not have captured the 3A girls' second-plactrophy at the state cross country meet at Salt Lake City's Sugarhouse Park e Oct. 22. In crossing the finish line with a time of 18:36.7, Carter took some state cross country in pain out of what had been a afternoon. Her Shae teammate, was a heavy Messersmith, favorite for winning the state 3A race. Throughout the season, Messersmith had won every race she had been in, including those with 4A and 5A runners. Things looked right on track when Messersmith took an early lead in her race. The burden of carrying Lehi's hopes for the race fell onto Carter's shoulders. She bore it well. Running in the lead throng with opponents from Emery, Carbon, North Sanpete, Delta, and Cedar City, she maintained her place near the front as she had done at weekend invitation-al- s throughout this season. To the cheers of Pioneer supporters, she crossed the finish line in second place. Holly finished 18th, Cummings Messersmith 25th, Jamie Elmer 26th, Jessica Dixon 32nd, Rachel Watkins 49th, and Tricia Henrie 75th. Despite Carter's great finish, it was the clustering of Lehi's other scoring runners that allowed them to easily outdistance third-plac- e Park City's point totals. The final scores were Cedar City 44, Lehi 89, Park City 123, Pine View 130, Wasatch 137, Carbon 145, Snow Canyon 175, Ben Lomond 186, Ogden 232, Tooele 240, Richfield 269, and Delta 290. As the Utes forced their offense, Cooper Football at Lehi High School has just four more weeks to go and the Pioneers are just that far away from proving the pollsters right for picking them number one through most of the 1997 season in 3A. d Beginning with a duel this Friday on the Pioneer Field at 7 p.m. between the Pioneers and Bear River's Bears coached by former Lehi coach Jeff Kilts, sixteen teams have a shot at the state gold which is scheduled to be decided Saturday, Nov. 22 at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. Bear River, the fourth-plac- e finisher in Region 7 and sporting a 7 season mark, is a "solid team" according to Lehi coach Chad Wilson, but they finished behind Morgan, Ogden and Ben Lomond. Morgan is ranked number two in the 3A polls. Ogden was defeated soundly by Lehi early in the season. Lehi, boasting a 0 record, the number one ranking in the e finish in state, and the Region 10, has proven its strength throughout the season. Should the Pioneers get around the Bears, they will then play either Delta or Dixie at home on Nov. 8. Places and times for later games will be announced to culon minate with the semi-final- s Nov. 15 and the finale, Nov. 22. Other teams in the running for the state crown include Park City or Granite. Using the hook and trailer pass-ruplay, Uintah thought they could catch the Pioneers n napping, but Lehi stopped them. Cooper ran 13 times for 51 yards and passed for 139 yards on seven of thirteen attempts. Bryce Cutler carried the ball four times for 28 yards. On the receiving end of Cooper's passes, Hadfield added 61 yards on two receptions, Trent and Travis Colledge accounted for 16 on two catches and 32 on one reception, respectively. Jake Terry and Cutler each caught one for 21 and 9 yards. the Pioneers Defensively, highlighted Deven Bateman and Drew Wilson who were credited by Coach Chad Wilson with covering Uintah's star tight end so closely he didn't receive a pass all night. Bateman also had nine tackles to his credit; Wilson added six, an interception and a pass break up. Rett Sage was his usual dependable self with 13 tackles and two quarterback sacks. In addition to Hadfield's kick blocks, he had six tackles, one for first-roun- 2-- 9-- first-plac- 0 lead. After trading offensive series the Utes drove 60 yards and capped their effort with a sprint by their talented tailback. On the attempted PAT kick, Hadfield again broke through the line and blocked the kick, getting hit in the chest with the oval. In the final quarter, Cooper passed 45 yards to Hadfield to field goal and set up a the 13-- 6 margin. Uintah countered with two passes covering n 53 yards, the second on a play to the one-fomark. After the score, Uintah chose to go for two points with an option play. Lehi's Matthew Peterson and Hadfield stuffed the drive with Peterson covering the quarterback and then running down the pitch man for a twice each, Week Ending Nov. 1,1997 Favored Team 557 577 3A CEDAR CITY or CEDAR CITY EMERY LEHI MORGAN or MORGAN SNOW CANYON 39-ya- fourth-and-sixtee- Diff.
