Buying a diamond is one of the major purchases you will make in your lifetime. Knowing what you are getting can be very confusing these days with all the letters, numbers and descriptions that are bantered about by diamond salespeople. In recent years, many consumers have sought after "certificated" diamonds, diamonds that were accompanied by some kind of certificate or grading report from a lab or other entity. These reports vary greatly in credibility and true disclosure of the diamond you are buying. The value of a diamond depends on four factors, commonly called the "Four C's." They are Carat weight, Cutting quality, Clarity and Color. Most documents state the weight of a diamond and its Color and Clarity. Although some percentages may be listed, the quality of the Cut is not quantified. The only document that tells the whole truth about the diamond you are buying - all four C's - is the AGS Diamond Quality Document. The DOD lists a specific grade for Cut along with Color and Clarity and precise Carat weight. All the factors of a diamond's quality can dramatically affect its beauty and value. Diamonds with the same color and clarity may vary in value by 25 or more as a result of the cutting. You should demand to know all about each of the Four C's and a qualified, knowledgeable and credentialed jeweler can do that. As members of the AGS, we tell the whole truth, and we have the Diamond Quality Document to back that up. ierraWest Deseret Book J E WELERS Sierra Center 1344 So. 800 Orem (S.E. of Univ.
