Pipe Trades had future plans for orbital welding training, but when the computer chip manufacturer announced its intentions to build in Lehi, the Utah Pipe Trades took immediate action. "We bought the most widely-use- d computerized orbital welding Idaho-base- d system. It fuses pipes together, making seamless connections," said Thomas L. Lewis, director of training for Utah Pipe Trades Educational Program. "Micron requires this procedure. To prepare, union pipefitters are committing 20 hours of their personal time to train on the new system." Micron uses German-mad- e polyvinylidene fluoride pipes and miles of stainless steel pipe that must be precision cut and welded. Lewis explains that Pipe Trades originally organized two orbital welding classes with six openings. Within five days, 60 journeyman had called to register. Today there is a waiting list with two-mon- th steadily-increasin- g enrollment: 36 journeymen have graduated and 48 more are scheduled to attend. is "Technology constantly changing. To keep up with changes, companies like Micron usually employ pipefitters for the life of the plant," says Lewis. "We've seen it happen in Idaho. Now that Utah will have a Micron plant, we want to provide a guaranteed resource of trained, qualified people." The Utah Pipe Trades provides training for its 1200 members through membership funds.
