Show Citizen, Press, Review - Wed., July 29, 1992 - Page 8 Her friends claim she's likerocky road ice cream, because it accu- rately describes her life and personality: ups and downs and pretty nutty. If she were an animal, she would be an eagle who soars to great heights and keeps an eye on her territory. She's like the color red, bold and naughty. Her style of car is a convertible Volkswagen beetle, the epitome of automobile personality. She is, of course, Valerie Lorensen, May Employee of the Month. Bom in Gunnison, Utah, Val graduated from Gunnison High School. She went on to study nursing at Brigham Young University where she earned an associate degree in 1975. After graduating, Val began her IHC nursing career at IDS Hospital and after two years, joined the AFH team. Her talents have been an extraordinary find. According to Sue Fleming, as- sistant administrator of Nursing Services, Val has been an ideal employee. "She is enthusiastic about nursing, and, while providing the best care for patients, she is loyal to her staff and looks out for their best interest," Sue said. "With her wicked sense of humor, you can usually find her in the middle of the group that is laughing hardest." She joined the OR team as a staff nurse and after four years of service was promoted to manager in June 1990. While learning new job responsibilities, Val returned to school to complete a bachelor's degree. In addition to her family, church and job responsibilities, she attended classes and studied 20 hours per week. The year 1992 was a turning point for Val both professionally and personally. She was promoted to administrative director, in January and May 2 she achieved a personal goal, graduating with her bachelor of science in nursingfrom the University ofPhoe-nix- . ORan-esthesi- Val began working in the old hospital on the medical floor and later moved to the surgical floor. With the move to the new facility in 1981, she moved to Labor and Delivery, where she worked for five years. Although she claims she has loved every area of nursing care, in 1986, Val found the place she wanted to stay - the operatingroom. Julyl Girl to Kent and Dena Stanley Larsen of Orem.
