Show J Citizen, Press, Review - Wed., July 29, 1992 - Pajge Melodrama tickles the funny bone By MARC HADDOCK Buddy Youngreen and company have brought a delightful melodrama, "Please Marry My Nellie, to the Heritage Theatre, formerly the Lehi 5th Ward Meetinghouse, for a benefit performance to help fund restoring the hi storic building that once served as an LDS meeting house and was later Lehi's City Hall. "PleaseMarry My Nellie," which was written by Youngreen and Lyle Clark, is melodrama in the classical style, complete with a pure, young heroine, a dastardly villain, a dashing hero and enough corny jokes to keep the audience chuckling through the night. Rachel Shill is perfect as Nellie Lovelorn, the young heroine who unwittingly signs a contract of marriage to the villainous Jebediah T, Jaundice, who is out to get the fortune left to her by her dearly departed father. Miss Shill has a fresh face and an engaging style and brings back a thick southern accent after a year in North Carolina. She also has a wonderful singingvoice, which was featured in last year's Lehi Arts Council production of "The Pirates of Penzance." One of the highlights of the performance is her first appearance in a dress made from a Turkey Red Flour sack. It is a hoot. Erik Warnberg is Truman Goodblood, the banker's son who woos and wins Nellie's Love. Warnberg plays the role to the hilt, rushing through the audience to save the day numerous times only to succumb to a series of pratfalls on stage. As Jebediah T. Johnson, Joel A. Osborne is deliciously villainous and appropriately inept. He earns numerous boos and hisses as he tries tricks young Nellie and steal her fortune. He then lashes our hero, Truman Goodblood, to the railroad tracks in a delightful twist on an old theme. Carol Hancock plays Nellie's mother, Fanny Lovelorn, with a combination of dignity and silliness. She and her husband, Boyd, also provide a short musical review as a warm-u- p act prior to the production, where she has a chance to show off her musical skills, as well. The ensemble is capped with Boyd Hancock as the drunk and Vernene Butler as Sally Vation, a temperance crusader who falls off the wagon to hilarious effect. Musical effects are provided by pianist Dee Ann Nichols, who obviously has a ball in a multifaceted role that has her accompanying the sented as a dinner theater, with Mellor Banquets providing a western-style meal to go along with the fun. The old cultural hall, where the dinner and play are staged, present somechallenges. The stage is small, but is used to very good effect. The room is not air conditioned, but (valuable i 5-- records will also be available. Elder J. Richard Clarke, a member of the LDS Church's First Presidency of the Seventy, will be a featured guest speaker during the Wednesday evening session.
