Last week wasn't the best of weeks for the Lehi Pioneer basketball team. Lehi entered the state playoffs as the first place seed from Region 7 and the fifth ranked team in 3A competition, but came back with two disappointing losses and not a single state win. In the first round, the Pioneers faced the fourth ranked Sky View Bobcats. Sky View jumped out to a massive lead, scoring the first 15 points of the game and holding Lehi scoreless for the first three minutes. They actually had a tough defense," commented senior Joe Mattson, who added six points to the total. Point guard Bart Brockbank also chipped in six points while Chamberlain knocked down five points and hauled in five rebounds, and Ryan Turpin, Jon Bailey, and Brain Cook each added two points. Cook also added five rebounds to the team's total of 24 compared to Sky View's 36. The Bobcats pulled down 24 offensive rebounds alone while Lehi was only able to acquire eight. The Pioneers were able to come within ten by the end of the quar- ter, 17-- 7. the second Lehi won pe- riod, but only outscored their opponents by two points. Lehi jumping to a closed the gap to seven when Copper hit one of his two treys, but the Bobcats nailed the clutch free throws to coast to a 17 point win, In the consolation bracket, nt 57-4- the Pioneers faced an angry Murray team. The Spartans scored the first five points of the game, but paused as the Lehi team took the lead as Cooper and Chamberlain combined for nine points. The quarter ended with a trey from Richard Peterson and a four point lead for the Pioneers at 0. The usual high scoring Pioneers just couldn't hit as the team shot a low 37 percent from the field. Cooper was the only pi ayer that reached 16-1- 2. Murray used 21 points to control the second quarter, finishing the nalfwithaMurrayleadofsixpointe, Lehi came within three points but the in the fourth stretch, hitahead again, Spartans pulled ting 16 of 19 shots from the free throw line. Cooper topped the scoring chart again with 15, but was accompanied in the double figures column by Chamberlain with an even ten points. Brockbank scored eight points to add to his six assists, and Mattson added seven points. Cook and Matt Ekins each shot for six points, while Peterson chipped in five, and Bailey m ade four from the line. From the free throw line, the Pioneers team looked half decent, but the Spartans were viewed as outstanding. Lehi shot 33 and made 21, for a 63 percent finish, but Murray only missed five out of 34 charity shots to give them an 85 percent night. Bailey finished with the only perfect record at 4 while Mattson made five of seven attempts, and Brockbank hit four of six. The Murray team had several players that shot 80 percent or better from the line. The rebounding against Murray came easier, as the Chamberlain pulled in eight boards, and Cook leaped for seven. The season may have ended on a sour note for the Pioneers, but the young team was never expected to accomplish much this year. After all, the team did win the Region 7 crown, and they were ranked fifth in state. The Pioneer team also has quite a bit of potential for the following season. Cooper, the high point man for the season, finished region play with an average of 19.1 points per game, and ended as one of the top ten scorers in the state. day, March 14, at 9 a.m. in the Rec Center office, 41 E. 200 South.
