There are no leprechauns, but Ireland has its own magic By JANICE GRAHAM Is Ireland teeming with little green leprechauns? Can you follow an Irish rainbow to a glittering pot of gold? The answer to both questions is no. But according to Ken and Barbara Cromar of Cedar Hills, who lived in there for 2 12 years, the real Ireland does have its own genuine magic, and that's no blarney. Through fairy tale mists loom turreted castles on emerald hills. Afternoon adventurers explore ancient fortresses and ruined towers as readily as spelunkers explore caves. If an interesting-lookinedifice is surrounded by a padlocked fence, a key can usually be obtained from a neighbor, says Barbara, though several famous structures like Kilkenny Castle offer guided tours. One day Ken and his small son Raymond ventured into an abandoned castle. They passed sheep living on the ground floor and climbed a spiral staircase into enchantment. Parts of the ancient roof had eroded away allowing nature to wave her friendly wand over the cold, lonely stones. Before them lay a rare, ethereal garden cloaked in luxuriant mosses, ferns, and trees. Some say Ireland would be paradise if only the sun showed its face more often. Skies are normally cloudy gray except on the few days a year of full sun. The Irish worship these rare golden days by spending dawn to dusk on the beaches. As a result they come home red as lobsters. Dublin, the capital city, celebrated its birthday in 1988. About 30 years behind the r buses times, it buzzes with yellow and minis tiny cars resembling tin cans. (Ken says it takes $50 to fill up your gas tank so small cars are a must.) Women sell flowers and vegetables out of g -- 1,000-year-o- double-decke- ld large baby buggies. Maps are also a must. Mazes of curving streets have no rhyme or reason. "Nobody has any idea where anything is," says Ken. "People give you directions by landmarks." Confused travelers get tips such as, "It's near the Dropping Well Pub." The Irish have more holidays than you can shake a shillelagh at. As on the TV show "Cheers," they love to visit and celebrate at the local pub. Fiercely loyal sports fans, a popular saying goes, "If we beat the British, the Guiness (the favorite brew) will flow like the Liffey" (a river running through Dublin). March 17 is a national holiday honoring Saint Patrick who brought Christianity to Ireland. Many people make a yearly pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain, where the patron saint spent 40 days fasting and praying for his people. Leon Uris wrote, "In Ireland there is no future, only the past happening over and over." Perhaps because Ireland has always been a troubled country, d and quick the Irish fight back by being with a joke. Visitors literally bend over backwards to plant a kiss on the legendary blarney stone located on a castle precipice. Blarney, or pleasant talk intended to deceive without offending, is a trademark of the Irish. A quick-witte- d people, they pride themselves on their gift of gab. It's not surprising that Ireland's claim to fame is its literary heritage. A familiar Irish poem wishes visitors well: "May the road rise up to meet you, And may the wind always be at your back." Where castles dot hillsides covered in 40 shades of green and sunshine is pure gold; leprechauns, shamrocks, or not, Ireland sounds enchanting. light-hearte- m Co!d. Cash. When I was a boy growing up in Lehi the only kind of job we could find was farm work. So during afternoons I summer's hauled straw and bucked bailed hay d thinning Using a hoe, I crawled down seemingly endless rows of sugar beets for Roger Gordon and the Tatersolls. Jean Phillips hired me to pick sweet corn for him until Doc Eddington linked my severe nose bleeds to the corn's irritating pollen. Farm work isn't easy. And the pay was never more than 65 cents an hour those long ago years when I was in my teens. Furthermore, I distinctly remember detesting each of those jobs for their difficulty and innate boredom. But I did save nearly every penny I earned for three summers to buy my first car. And the discipline to get up early, to focus on the job at hand, and to appreciate a deep, cold drink of water are still with me after all these years. $25.00 6 Drying Cycles Gentle FINISH GUARD picked up a pinch of the seed. "Put it down immediately," said Goodwin, "I would as willingly give you so much gold dust." While alfalfahay and wheathave been important sources ofincome to Lehi farmers, no cash crop had as much effect on the town's economy as did the sugar beet. Although first grown in the community in 1852, the sugar beet did not impact local agriculture until the 1890s after the Lehi Sugar Factory was built. In the years immediately preceding World War I, dry farming became an important industry in the Lehi and Cedar Valley area. The principal crop of these farmers has been Turkey Red Wheat (hard wheat), although safflower has recently become popular also. Duringthe World War Ilyears, a greater variety of crops was grown in Lehi than at present. E. B. Garrett, who was vocational agriculture instructor at Lehi High School for nearly 40 years, provided the following summary of Lehi's 1949 agricultural acreage in the "Lehi Centennial History:" dry farm wheat (12,350 acres), alfalfa (3,300 acres), irrigated wheat (2,250 acres), barley (2,000 acres), pasture and tame hay (1,800 acres), silage corn (400 acres), oats (390 acres), sweet corn (250 acres), peas (130 acres), sugar beets (195 acres), truck crops (110 acres), potatoes (80 acres), tomatoes (80 acres), dry beans (18 acres), and rye (13 acres). Today dry farm wheat is still the largest crop in the area, followed by alfalfa, soft wheat, barley, silage corn, and oats all irrigated crops. Prominent Lehi farmers of the past, who would stand amazed at the extensive sprinkling systems which since the 1970shavereplacedmany flood irrigation operations, include Herman Allred, Ray Allred, Robert Allred, Rodney C.
