Show Free Press - Wednesday, April 17, 1985 - Page 7 i Blood Bank screens for AIDS antibody The Blood Bank at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center is now screening all blood donations for an antibody associated with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a generally fatal disease that destroys the body's natural immunological defenses. The test for enzyme-linke- d assa- y- ELISA for shor- t- indicates the presence of the antibody to a retrovirus (HTVL-III- ) that is present in the vast majority of AIDS victims. Morris Clark, president of the Lehi Civic Improvement Association, presents trophy buciles to 1984 Lehi Round-U- p Royalty, Queen JaNae Barlow, center, and attendants Allison Allred and Connie Morse. ELISA does not diagnose AIDS, however, because the antibody is also found in nearly half of all gay males who have no AIDS symptoms, people with certain other d diseases, and a small Lehi Round-u- p Queen Contest set for May 18 An invitation is being extended to young women of the area to enter the Lehi Round-U- p Queen Contest Saturday, May 18. Competition starts at 5:30 p.m. with a Judge's Tea, held in the Lehi Riding Club Clubhouse, 290 N. 500 West. At this time, contestants will be asked to model in western attire and display personality, her knowledge of rodeo and extemporaneous speaking. Starting at 7:30 p.m. in the rodeo arena, horsemanship will be judged where' both rider, her mount and gear will be considered. To be eligible for this title, girls must be 16 years of age, single, not serving on a conflicting royalty and not a former Round-U- p blood-relate- the of percentage general population. Still, if the antibody is found in a donor sample at UVRMC, the blood will not be used for transfusion. "The purpose of the test is to prevent transmission of this deadly disease (AIDS) by blood tran- Queen. Contestants should be prepared to serve as representatives of the Round-Ucelebration and rodeo, in help advertise the Round-U- p personal appearances and riding in parades. The dates of the Lehi Round-U- p for 1985 are June 27, 28 and 29. The Stock Parade will open the Round-U- p on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m. During the celebration a complete schedule of activities are being planned including a flower show, craft and hobby show, reunions, a chuck wagon breakfast, two miniature parades and various other community-wid- e competitions and programs. p sfusion," says Valene Johnson, UVRMC blood bank supervisor. Johnson adds, however, that even before the test was developed, blood transfusions were linked with AIDS in only one percent of cases. "The chance of contracting AIDS through blood transfusions is literally one in a million. The lives saved through transfusions far outweight that risk. The new test is just a move to make an already safe blood supply even safer."
