In all, 161 new teachers were hired by the district for the beginning of school. Most of these, 101, were to fill vacancies made by retiring or leaving teachers. The remaining 60 were created by the opening of new positions to accommodate rising district enrollments and to reduce teacher loads. A total of 1,300 individuals applied for teaching positions in the district this year which represents nearly 10 applications for each opening. AT the elementary level there were 584 applicants for 87 positions. At the secondary level there were 596 applicants for 50 openings. In addition, 119 individuals applied for 24 openings in the special education area. Most of these apby plicants were interviewed district personnel. At the elementary level, for instance, 460 candidates were interviewed. "These statistics speak well both of our personnel office and the quality of the newly hired teachers," said Alpine Superintendent, Dr. Clark Cox. "The amount of paperwork required just to process 1,300 applications is staggering by itself. Add to that the screening and prioritizing of the applicants andyou have .a fon siderable amount of work to be accomplished by our personnel staff. And, this is just for the teaching positions. Our people are to be commended for their efforts in insuring that all applicants were treated with fairness and ob- jectivity." "With so many applicants, we are virtually assured of having quality teachers to staff our schools. Those hired represent the top ten percent of their group in education, experience and character." "It should be noted," concluded Cox, "that the district administration is implementing both the spirit and the letter of the board's newly passed policy on the employment of relatives. Every applicant for a job in the district is now required to identify all of his or her relatives who are presently employed with the district. As far as we are aware, no individual has been hired here this year who is not in compliance with the policy." ltr Better Servic ( ABOUT HOME BIRTH Saran Wrap ) r4 '1.19 49 oz. . 46 oz. . $2.27 Betty Crocker Brownie Mix . 4.25 . . . . .
