County will wish they had dredged Jordan Several Utah County legislators were very unhappy with Salt Lake County officials when they failed to make the necessary approvals to get the Jordan River dredged by the Army Corps of Engineers before an expected high spring run-of-f hits in Spring. Some even went so far as to threaten to "hold hostage" the proposal to breach the Great Salt Lake causeway until Salt Lake County came around and agreed to the Corps' dredging proposal. Apparently they were operating on the premise that if we are going to be flooded, Salt Lake County is going to be flooded as well - unless they come around. But in the end it was all heat and little light, as the Corps' n deadline passed and they pulled out of the proposal. As part of its last gasp, the legislature approved breaching the causeway, but appropriated no funds for the project with some legislators predicting that it really wouldn't make much difference if the causeway was breached or not. Salt Lake County's refusal to make the necessary agreements with the Army Corps of Engineers sends a similar message. Apparently the County officials thought the costs of the liability of the project would be greater than any benefits the County could derive from the project. Certainly, the agreements were not without drawbacks, both in the area of water management for the Salt Lake County Water Users who own most of the water in the Jordan and for Salt Lake County. Utah County officials were faced with the same drawbacks, but felt the chance to dredge the flooding river would never be better than now. Despite the drawbacks they went ahead and signed, with not of haggling witnessed in the county to the north but to no avail. The problem is we are certain to see more water in Utah Lake this year than we saw last year. And initial estimates are figuring the Jordan River will be handling 3,100 cubic feet per second this spring when the water hits its high 1,000 feet more than last year when Salt Lake point County experienced flooding problems. And Salt Lake County won't be able to do anything to slow down the flow of water, since no obstructions can be placed on the Jordan River when the lake is above coma condition that has existed for years and will promise get worse this spring. There is very little that can be done about a flooding Utah Lake and an engorged Jordan River. The proposed dredging project would not have been a total solution, but it would hav$ helped both counties., s!. thcwatirs tise this spiitig And it may webehat-wheand Salt Lake County honfeowners find the flood at theirV! doorstep, their county officials will wish they could go back and reconsider the Army Corps of Engineers' offer to clear out the Jordan's river bed. But, they had nothing over on our male cheering section, which is of course, most of I jehi High's wrestlers. It's a delight to hear those bass voices during the cheers. Before that the pep clubs' soprano section was enthusiastic, but shucks, what's a chorus of sopranos without those necessary alto noises. I've noticed that more of the studentbody is sitting together, rather than all over the gym. That's unity for you. I'm thrilled to see it I know that the region wrestling meet is coming up and those brave, strong, rugged wrestlers would appreciate the same kind of support from other factions of sports as they've showed by attending the you better believe it ball games. Then, of course there's the girls games, the sophs and the junior varisty play bull too, and so does the ninth grade. That provides lots of entertainment in town. If you wonder what to do on these long cold winter nights, how about attending some of these great sports events at the school? Speaking of sports . . . how about our city sports? There has been a smooth transition from one city council to another. There is an air of determination at city council from front page be considered right along with the water and sewer." former city services Webb, superintendent, said, "we can go after new business. We feel that Lehi City should set up some kind of contract and we should be competitive, the same as UP&L. That's the way we'll make money." He also asked the council to look at the merits of Lehi's power system. "We should set up something so the department knows where it's going. We've got to have it if we're going to keep good people. We pay out money to train people, then after five years of training they leave and give someone else the benefit of this training," he continued. "We've got to do everything we can to operate efficiently." He also asked the council to let the power board know of new annexation considerations. Mayor Tripp asked Don Pinkham, city building inspector, to work with the board and inform members about annexation prospects. By MARC HADDOCK It used to be Leap Year was a big deal at least that's the way I remember it. But I've hardly heard anything - about Iap Year this year. It was a novelty, an event. It was a year that was one day longer than all the others - a year employers got a free day from salaried employees, who made the same whether they worked the extra day or not. It was the year politicians started that painful process by which we selected the chief executive of our country - probably because it gave them an extra day to campaign. It was the day the whole world played catch up because the earth seems determined to spin around and its own speed rather than complying to time as it is kept by (the editor's who makes it. As we move towards a less sexist society, the idea might prevail that women don't need a special year to propose marriage any more. After all, if people are to be treated as people and not members of a given sex, then it really shouldn't make much difference who does the asking when it comes to marriage, should it? At least, that's one viewpoint. Another view would say that a proposal of marriage should be initiated by the man always Leap .. er, artificial Year or no. The other three years it was up to one put a proposal on a billboard where the other drove by often, or the man to do the asking. The mayor is very well prepared at each meeting, and the new council members are adjusting to the shock of filling a public office. Mayor Tripp has received some unsigned letters of complaint already. That goes with the office, but he wishes the citizens who took the time to write the letters would take the time to sign them. At a recent public hearing several citizens showed up to voice concerns about city business and heavy decisions to be made. Isn't that great? No country in the world but ours would permit a common citizen to attend a meeting and speak up and express opinions of his or her own. The council members treated the concerned citizens with courtesy and respect, No one jumps over Leap Year anymore - man-made.- annexation -- cont. naturally, those citizens deserved their respect Wouldn't it be terrible if nobody ever showed up at a public hearing? Garland : Mayne is superin . ) time understanding a marriage proposal from any other angle. It would seem to me that if someone is making a proposal from a less than secure base, he or she is asking prematurely. But I wouldn't to place any money on that statement. I have yet to be turned down for a proposal of marriage, so I wouldn't know. Still, I think the subject is considered too delicate by many people, or perhaps too frivolous, to be bothered with. That would account, in part at least-- , at the lack of interest in Leap Year this Leap Year. ,For those individuals who still aren't worried about proposals and marriage, but who are busily preparing for Valentine's Day next the American Greetings week, people have sent out a list of popular terms of endearment for Cupid's holiday. And it seems that a consumer preference study by the company has found that 'Honey' comes in number one, with 'One I Love' coming in second.' 'Sweetheart' follows a close third and 'Darling' is rated fourth. Do you Really 'One I Love' is far too generic for my taste. If you don't like the four most popular, the greeting card company offers the as suggestions following possibilities: Angel, angelface, babe (as in the old Bob Dylan standard, 'It Ain't Me, Babe), baby, beloved, buttercup, cherub (sounds like the subject of adoration is rather plump), chickabiddy (?), cookie or cupcake (these are for individuals who equate eating and romance), dear, doll, duckling, honeybunch, kitten, love, lovey, lambie pie, lambkins, pet, poopsie woopsie, pumpkin, princess, precious, snookums, snuggle bunny (yech), sugar, sweetie, sweetie pie and tootsie. I'm kind of partial to 'Babe,' but then I like Bob Dylan. I'm a little queasy about referring to a person I love as a food or an animal. And for those for whom the thrill is gone, let me offer the . following suggestions: Hey you (a sure attention getter), the (a blatantly sexist term that does not appear in my vocabulary), my old lady or old man, mother (from a husband to his wife), father (vice versa) and you lazy bum. Since there's a week before the illustrious Valentine's Day holiday, I'd be happy to pass any other terms of endearment or disenchantment has any if anyone along suggestions. when and where, not if. After receiving approval from all the cities for improvements at the plant Mr. Mayne said they will hold a bid opening in May on the project. He expects that work will be finished in the fall. The district has received a loan at low interest for $800,000 towards improvements at the plant. Funds from the facility itself will be added to the loan for the improvements which will cost just over one million dollars. Mr. Mayne will conduct tours of the facility to any interested groups or individuals. The plant is located at 6400 N. 5050 W. Personally, in - Want Your Carpets Clean?
