Then on Oct. 14 they will take on the Springville Red Devils in Lehi at 3 p.m. Spring'i)le is being picked to head the heap of Region Eight teams when the season is over and carry over the region's hopes into the playoffs. They beat Carbon last week 20-- to keep their record There is a Iehi connection here as the Red Devil's great tailback, Eric Jacobsen, is the nephew of former Lehi coach, Lloyd Jacobsen. Daren Springville's quarterback, Clubb is also supposed to be one of the better q.b.s of the county. The key to a Pioneer victory will probably be sheer confidence and e pride. If there was a competition for Springville-Leh- i players, the Pioneers would hold their own. There is terrific talent on one-on-on- 0 Lehi's team. Some of the best individual talents to come down the pike. They've just got to keep their cool, ooze confidence the way other teams do and go for the win. They d proved they could play with the best when they manhandled the Vikings in the second half last week. The season's finale will be a game on Thursday, Oct. 20 with Carbon at 3 p.m., the weekend of the deer hunt. head-to-hea- Spikers beat Pleasant Grove in 1st win of season A LONE PIONEER lowers the boom on Viking who is surrounded by teammates. Never fear, help will arrive soon. , Pioneers anchored toy P.G. Vikings side kick for good field position and on the next series had to punt . Great defensive work by Palmer, Trapp and Lucero caused the Vik'ivgs no end of trouble and Inougl i about their.i'irst punt of the game. Pleasant Grove's passing and option plays had "the Pioneers wondering in that lisl half and they were down. by". 35-- when the lia'l' time whistle blew Lehi's defense i a me. alive in Uie 'second half and the Viking;; saw their treasure ship anchored again and again by quarterback sacks, vicious tackles and good defensive moves. . The Vikings were in Pioneer territory several times but the stubborn Lehi defense thwarted them each time. 'Hey, we can play with these guys," Andrus slated, '"P.O. didn't pull off their horses, they wore still trying with their big guns. It was homecoming and they Wanted to give the big homecoming crowd all they wanted." Andrus went on to say that they "didn't play ball the first' half. Pride entered in the second half nnd we held them." Football is a. game of inches and ifs. If the Pioneers. hadn't had the air taken out of their sails during the first few minutes of last week's voyage on the Vikings sea - the game would probably have had an entirely different outcome. "The kids were up for the game. They were ready, but they went flat after the first couple of setbacks?, .' Coach Lou Andrus said:- - ' It was indecision as much as anything. They just didn't know who to take. We didn't change anything at the half. We just asked them to have pride and they just decided to go out there and do a job." Those setbacks Andrus was talking about were caused by a fumble on a . kickoff return.- a - penalty.., facemasking deflected pass right into aWfff' a Viking's -- arms. About this time the score was 22-for Pleasant Grove. The Pioneers offense and tried some razzle-dazzl- e it paid off When Todd Street took the ball, pitched to .Madsen who raced to paydirt to put Lehi on the board. The point after wairgoocl and the game was no longer a shut-ou- t. The Vikes recovered a Lehi on 0 . Lehi's. offensive machine just couldn't get -- uncorked against the Vikings. The Vikings seemed to control Lehi's vaunted running attack, holding down Gordon and Madsen to less than their usual yardage, but Lehi had their share of sacks and tackles in the last two periods! This Was the first time the schools had met since 1980 and they began a renewal of jivalries that existed before days. . P.G. scored 22 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second and that was it. Lehi got their 7 in the first quarter and then failed to find the magic potion necessary to get the ball over the goal line again. - Lehi was outdistanced in every 2-- SflSLfSftem category1 including It's been a while coming, but Lehi's young volleyball team showed Pleasant Grove what coach Debbie Naylor knew all along, the team has what it takes to win. It took a minute for the lady Pioneers to get revved up, in fact but they lost the first game 15-when they started in gear, they were not to be denied, winning the second and third games 15-- 9 and 15-Becky Barnes 768-969- for six spiked the winning point in the third game. Jennifer Adamson started things off by getting three serves over for points; Vicki Ingle, Lisa Hardy, Jen Adamson again, with some excellent work by Liz Peck and the Pioneer ladies won their first match of the season. Lisa Hardy, Liz Peck, Becky Barnes, and Jennifer Adamson all served well in the second game, but the whole team showed the confidence and determination it takes to win. The team sponsored a dance last weekend to earn funds to buy new uniforms and now, with this win under their belts, things are looking up for the team. Ingle is the only senior on the team, and the way the juniors and sophs are improving each game, Lehi's spikers are on their way. Fitness Tips When is the best time to exercise? By DALE NELSON When is the best time to exercise? Should it be after you eat? Now don't be too hasty with your answer. Oftentimes we are led to believe the hours after eating metabolizes more calories than the same exercise before eating. Exercise seems to activiate whatever is responsible for the excess calorie burn-up- . The Cornell findings were apparent after the especially subjects overate, because the act of eating itself raises the metabolic rate. The body becomes conservative when one doesn't eat much, so there is also merit in eating more food to lose weight, wrong things without questioning. If weight loss is an ulterior motive for your exercise program, you may want to rearrange your activity and eating schedules. A study in Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University shows that moderate exercise in this case fast walking - from 45 minutes to as much as five - -- provided the foods are not high in calories. This is another reason for eating a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Running not included Please note that the Cornell study did not include running after a heavy meal. It is too traumatic. I doubt there are many people who can tolerate running after eating. We don't advise it. i:. penalti($PThe Vikes were penalized time and time again, but the Pioneers couldn't capitalize on the P.G. mistakes. Andrus praised the defensive line, Ryan Trapp, Shane Julian and Dan Wall. He also commended the offensive line with Geyerman, Wall and Christofferson. "Turner did a good job too, Corey Downs was great in the second half." ODeer Heard any NEWS lately?
