He is in the beleagured business of teaching and he's loving every minute of it. That boyish twinkle may come as he practices roping for upcoming rodeo skirmishes, but a more logical reason for the gleam is the satisfaction he's getting from his daily contact with the young men he's teaching at Lehi High School. Clay Chrislensen had a chance to student teach under master teacher Byron Memmotl who retired last spring. "He's played a big role in my teaching methods," Chrislensen said. "He has influenced me so much. I have a lot of respect for him." Clay was Utah Slate FFA president and was with Mr. Memmott's reputation before he ever came to Lehi to student teach. "He's respected by everybody, not just in Lehi, but in the whole state," Clay said. "I liked Mr. Memmott and I liked Lehi when I student taught here." When he heard that Mr. Memmott was retiring and that the job was open, he applied and was hired. Clay didn't come to Lehi alone. He married his wife, Lori, in 1980, and their first child, a little boy named Brett, was born six weeks ago. "I really wanted to come to Lehi. My folks live in Riverton and you've heard the saying, 'get as close to your home town as you can without being there.' I was lucky," Clay said. He grew up in Riverton, won a host of honors in high school rodeo and FFA competitions, went to Utah State University on FFA , "I feel that some important and difficult decisions will have to be made by council members in the next few years and that I'm . to make intelligent qualified decisions. This is my community and I'm committed to spend the f time necessary to perform city ,, business." r Civic Improvement Committee. Garry R. Sampson Progressive Party candidate for mayor of Lehi, Garry R. Sampson, was born in Delta, Utah in 1941. His family moved to Lehi when Garry was in the ninth grade. He graduated from Lehi High School and later served an LDS mission to the Gulf States. Following his mission he returned to Lehi where he married Kay Stewart, a daughter of Raymond and Alice Stewart. They are the parents of six children. He graduated from Utah Technical College and has worked as personnel director for Boise Cascade, regional administrator of Combined Insurance Company of America. He is presently working as personnel director for Consumer Power Association. He is a member of the Utah Chapter of the National Association of Personnel Directors and is vice president of the Sampson stated on accepting the Progressive nomination for mayor, "I realize the great responsibility the mayor has. Since my appointment as mayor we've seen the worst flood in 100 years and an evacuation because a drunk knocked out a gas line, but it's been an interesting and challenging time. The city is in good financial condition, operating in the black, and we haven't had to borrow on lax anticipation notes. Sampson thanked the people for pulling together at the time of flooding in Lehi, and for their support and the letters they've written to save the city's allocation of CRSP power." Promising to help keep Lehi a positive place to live, Sampson concluded his acceptance message, " Tim-panog- Water Planning Management Agency. Lori graduated with a degree in Physical Education and the couple moved to Vernal where Clay spent his first year of teaching agriculture at Uintah High School. "The kids are more receptive here. The officers are doing a good job, everyone is willing to help, and they keep right up to date on their records. They're doing a good job," Clay bragged about his students. He is amazed at the support of Lehi farmers and businessmen for the FFA program. "They're really boosters, both with money, time and other support." Vo-A- Sego Lily PTA Library's future discussed stake positions, currently serving as first counselor in the Twelfth Ward bishopric. He has served as president of the Band Parents Association at the high school for three years. GEORGE F. TRIPP GARRY SAMPSON Friendship ' When asked how he feels about the responsibility of stepping into Mr. Memmott's shoes, he said, "It still scares me. There are so many things going on all the time. I never feel I'm quite caught up. I have to work late and Saturdays to keep up." Lcri interrupted to say that if she wants to see Clay she has to go down to the high school and visit him there "He's usually out looking at projects and visiting the kids after school, expecially during the State Fair," Lori said. The teacher said that they're getting ready for the national convention now, and the state convention will be coming up in the spring. "Two kids are going to national, Brent Fox and Brent Johnson." When asked about goals, Clay said, "There's several things I'd like to see happen. I'd like to see at least one of our judging teams win the state competition, and it would give me lots of satisfaction to see kids start at the bottom and work up. I'd like to see the ones who have to struggle the most, succeed. It would be nice to see Lehi kids get the State Farmer Degree." He turned back to the papers he was correcting. They were scattered in piles all over the living room floor. Lori was giving tiny Brett his bottle; good smells were coming from the kitchen; a pitcture of a contented and happy young couple, although Clay says he will be happier when his students start earning the awards he knows they are capable of winning. That will be the icing on Clay Christensen's cake. Somehow you know that all's well g in the Department at Lehi High School.
