Executive Secretary Utah Education Association In recent years parents, teachers and others have beta complaining that kids don't have any heroes anymore. Wtfl, here's one for them. His name is Vance Anderson, and he lives in Ogden. Hi was a student at Ben Lomond High School that day. He was lifting weights at school because he wanted to set another record throwing the discus. .Actually, some discus throwers laughed when they saw Vance step up to make his throw. You see, most discus throwers are big guys. Few of them can "throw their weight" That is, it's tough to sling the discus as many feet i as they weigh in pounds. Vance Anderson was a little guy. He weighed only 116 pounds, and that's why all the heavyweights chuckled. They stopped laughing, though, when he tossed the discus 140 .feet Vance wrestled, too. In fact, he won the Ogden city championship. But back to the Ben Lomond High School weight room. Vance Anderson was doing knee bends with 320 pounds of iron on his shoulders. From somewhere, a little girl appeared. When she walked near the weightlifting area, someone warned her to move away. At just about that time, the bar on Vance's shoulder began to slip. Vance had to do something quickly. He figured he had two alternatives. He could try to sit down with the weight on his shoulders and work to control it, or he could take the easiest route and run out from beneath the weights and let them fall. But that might endanger the little girl behind him. So Vance Anderson sat with the 320 poounds and it It paralyzed him from the waist down, and doctors said he'd never walk. You don't tell a champion things like that It's been a few years now, and Vance Anderson walks with crutches and leg braces. He's married and the father of two. He's finished college and he's a psychiatric counselor. Sometimes schools invite Vance to speak to their students. If your kids don't get to hear him, tell them about Vance will you? There really are some heroes around. We will Sub For Santa Needs Volunteers Christmas is a special time for children. Snowmen, Christmas trees, Santa Claus and turkey dinner all delight and excite children this time of year. Unfortunately, some children do not share the thrill and excitement of Christmas that most children experience. Many children throughout the county are deprived of the Christmas joy that most of us take for granted because they are members of economically unfortunate families. Here in Utah County the Sub for Santa Program is reaching out to help the needy children of our community. In previous years, and thus far this year, individuals, families, religious groups, businesses and clubs of the community have been very generous in sponsoring unfortunate families and contributing to the Sub for Santa Program. Please contact Jeanette Tuita or Melody Snyder at the Division of Family Services, 260 West 300 North, Provo, for more information about how you or your organization can help in making this a Merry Christmas for 373-615- all children in the community. OF 19, SECTION Section Public Notice Thursday. December 18. lSJJbr Persons unholding patented mining claims on federal lands have until Dec. 30 to file their required annual mining statements. The requirement applies to holders of about 200,000 mining claims in Utah, acording to Robert Lopez, branch chief of Records and Data Management for the Bureau of Land Management in Salt Lake City. For claims located prior to Sept. 1, 1979, the claimant must file an affidavit or statement that a least $100 worth of work on the claim was completed prior to Aug. 31, 1979. Statements or affidavits, Lopez said, must be submitted to the BLM 136 East State Office, South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111. who located Persons claims between Sept. 1, 1979 and Dec. 30, 1979, and persons claiming unpatented mill or tunnel sites must file a notice that they intend to hold the claim. The filing requirements apply to claims on National Forest land as well as on land administered by the BLM. Persons locating claims during 1980 do not have to file statements until next busier roads, less open land and shorter daylight hours, sledding safety caution is suggested. To help parents coach their children in safe sledding procedures, the Utah Safety Council offers the following guidelines: 1. Dress children properly, covering hands, feet and ears against cold. Make sure their vision is not obstructed and that loose or long scarves are tucked away. 2. Keep sleds in top operating condition. Be watchful for broken parts and sharp edges. 3. Make sure children sled away from road and traffic areas. 4. The ideal sledding area is a broad, gently sloping hill far from streets with a long flat area to coast to a stop. 5. Instruct children to beware of bare spots in the snow and to stay away from frozen ponds or lakes. 6. Sledding should never proceed after daylight hours. Twilight is an especially heavy motor vehicle traffic time and an especially difficult time for visibility. 7. Teach your children that the proper position for sledding is with both arms and both legs on the sled. They should never try to sled standing up or with more children on a sled than the sled was built for. The Utah Safety Council urges parents to make sledding a family activity. With adult supervision of young children it is more fun and helps children learn good safety habits by example.
