Moreover, ample acreage could be secured without the necessity of sacrificing too many buildings. Over $90,000 was spent by the school board in Pleasant Grove to get the right location there without any contributions from the city other than the property owners' share of the total district expense. As pointed out by the committee, the East site in Lehi could be purchased and drained for less than that amount. Besides this the drainage program would open up a new area for building homes. For years the community has been split between upper and lower Lehi, with the result that many of the values to be found in community living have been lost. An opportunityhas arisen now to unite the townspeople behind to select a site for a new high school, but instead of becommove a the rifts appear to be growing wider. united, ing In an effort to eliminate as much community bickering as sible, a committee was selected which in turn employed a professional planner to assist them in their work of finding the right location for a high school. Several sites were considered. One site was located north of the state highway on or near the Frank Sharp property. Another was west of Fifth West and between Sixth and Seventh North streets. Still another, between Third and Fifth West from Sixth to Ninth North streets, and another on the east side of the city between Highway 91 and the lower Lehi road and east of Fourth East. Each site has certain advantages and disadvantages, so an effort was made to determine the best location on the basis of land use, population, building, and the residences of the students. In this study, special maps prepared by I. Dale Despain, county planning engineer, were used. Mr. Despain's detailed maps showed the location of student residences as follows: highway, the committee decided to COUNTRY IF THEVD BE select one of the sites located POSTPONED south of the highway. This site was recommended to the school board, but was frowned upon by the board because of the drainage expense. The board said if the east site were purchased, Lehi City would have to assume some responsibility in the drainage of the area, as well as CLEAR-FIEL- D annexing it into the city limits.
