As a member of the Academic Senate, I attended the Dec 7 meeting during which President Smith again raised the quarter versus semester issue. After several faculty members had the President their concerning input into the questioned decision-makin- the decade of the 1990s and has tried to put a process, directly asked President Smith what he was doing to include several students in the debate. His response was rather disturbing. First, he said he had spoken informally to several students and that some students expressed support for the quarter system because if you got into a bad class, you only had to endure it for 10 weeks. Other students had apparently stated a preference for the quarter system so that they could take winter quarter off to ski. President Smith also stated that concerning the issue (ASUU would compile the results and prepare a report). There is some concern over the effectiveness of this strategy due to the meager returns when this methodology was used during campus had never experienced the semester system, they were not able to make an informed decision on this issue. If students are to have a voice concerning the structure of the academic calender at the U., we must take action now. We cannot afford to wait for the President to invite the whole student body to discuss this issue with him.
